Woonsocket Weekend: French Heritage Day, Stadium Comedy Show

Fall is in the air this weekend — here's what's happening around Woonsocket.

What are you doing this weekend in Woonsocket?

The forecast for Woonsocket calls for sunny skies and temps in the 70s, so get out and enjoy some of this weekend's happenings.

Honoring the city's French-Canadian roots is the goal of Saturday's French Heritage Day on Sept. 7 at River Island Park. Free admission, starts at 9 a.m.

Performances, bus tours of the city, food [mais bien sur], a trivia contest, and an apres-festival at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs [$10 to get in] that caps the celebration starting at 5 p.m.

Among the luminaries will be Paws from the Pawtucket Red Sox.

At the Stadium Theatre, Rob Becker brings 'Defending the Caveman' to the stage Saturday night. It's the longest-running solo play in Broadway history [solo play? beg pardon: isn't that a 'monologue?'] and has been acclaimed for its humor and wit.

Show starts at 8 p.m. Online tickets $31 and $36.

Also this weekend, Chan's Fine Oriental Dining hosts a couple of tough-sounding outfits: Killer Kane and the Jewel City Blues Band on Saturday night, and the Chili Brothers with Amadee Castinell.

Online tickets are $12 for each show. 8 p.m. showtimes.

If the cooler weather has you thinking fall, make a trek out to apple orchards near Woonsocket, including Jaswell's in Smithfield, which is opening apple picking on Saturday.

The Rustic Tri-Vue Drive-In is on fall hours, too, showing on Friday and Saturday nights through Sept. 28.

Here's the line-up, set to start about 8 p.m. each night:

  • Kick-Ass 2 [R] with Riddick [R]
  • Getaway [PG-13] with We're the Millers [R]
  • Planes [PG] with Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters [PG]
$25 per car load.

And before they close for the season, be sure to pick up the new Rustic Drive-In tee-shirt available at the concession stand. $18, made by Hemlock Ink Custom Screenprinting.

And after French on Saturday, why not Greek on Sunday?

Kicking off Friday in Cranston is the 28th Annual Cranston Greek Festival, hosted by the Church of the Annunciation, 175 Oaklawn Ave. Cranston Patch Editor Mark Schieldrop posted a comprehensive preview; click the link above for more.
