Mom's Home Cooking Off to a Good Start on Florida Street

Silylath Phommaxaysy's new Southeastern Asian (with a Latin twist) takeout spot, Mom's Home Cooking, at 6 Florida St. has been enjoying a brisk business in its first two months.

Word of the restaurant, which debuted its dishes during Woonsocket's Block party Aug. 29 at the Taste of Woonsocket food tent, has spread beyond city borders.

At about 2 p.m., Amber and Patrick Kelley of North Smithfield, who had the day off Thursday afternoon, were waiting their first order from Mom's. Amber said they read about the restaurant in the paper. "I said let's go try that," Amber said. She said they were encouraged by a promising review of the place on Yelp

Phommaxaysy said local media and word of mouth account for about 20 new customers. They offer regular specials, so customers are encouraged to check in often for the latest deals and dishes. "We like to introduce new, different items," Phommaxaysy said.

The city's new businesswoman has lived in Woonsocket for about six years. She's been working on starting the restaurant for two years, she said. While striving to make Mom's Home Cooking a reality, Phommaxaysy has worked as a cook for Ida Louis Yacht Club in Newport, at Milton Academy in MA, and finally at an area nursing home for the last three years.

She said they'll cater for Thanksgiving, parties and events, too. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. till 10 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. till 9 p.m. Those are long hours to keep, but Phommaxaysy doesn't mind. "You have to make some sacrifices, but I enjoy doing it," she said.

You can check out the menu on the Mom's Home Cooking Facebook page or call the business at 401-766-7799.
