Woonsocket School Committee Approves Full-Day Kindergarten

A move to cut the program in 2010 to save money backfired.

Full-day kindergarten in Woonsocket is set to return in the fall.

The School Committee approved the program Wednesday, the Woonsocket Call reported.

Woonsocket previously offered full-day kindergarten up until 2010, when officials voted to cut it to half-day to save money. The move backfired, as there were corresponding cuts in state and federal funding, according to Superintendent Giovanna Donoyan.

Woonsocket’s legislative delegation last year secured $500,000 to fund full-day kindergarten.

The money will help pay for 11 new teachers, aides, and a bus, according to the Woonsocket Call.

The city's Budget Commission could vote on the plan Monday.
