Feds Give RI Schools $93K for Healthier Lunches

The funding was part of $25 million distributed nationwide by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Rhode Island was awarded $93,000 in federal funding for school kitchen equipment that officials say will make lunches healthier.

They money was part of $25 million distributed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to states across the country for similar initiatives.

"Children deserve to eat nutritious meals that will help them grow and focus, and I am glad Rhode Island was awarded these federal funds to update kitchen equipment so our schools can serve healthier meals," U.S. Rep. David Cicilline, D-RI, said in a statement.

report found that Rhode Island, 91 percent of school districts needed at least one piece of additional kitchen equipment to better serve nutritious meals to students.

Rhode Island officials will distribute the money to local schools, giving priority to schools where 50 percent or more of the enrolled students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
