Thursday: Budget Commission, Taxpayer Coalition, Stories, Register To Vote

Budget Commission -The Budget Commission meets this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. after a scheduled 30-minute executive session (closed to the public). On their agenda: An update on the closing of Fifth Avenue School, a second stab at the School Committee appeal of the dismissal of their suit against the state over state aid, discussion of an invoice from Bacon and Edge Consulting and discussion of restructuring.

Taxpayer Coalition - The Woonsocket Taxpayer Coalition will meet at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Elks Club, 380 Social St.

Story/Craft Time - Today at 1:30 p.m., the Woonsocket Harris Public Library hosts a third and fourth-grade story and craft time.

Candidates forum - Candidates running for the General Assembly in the 2012 election have accepted an invitation to the Aug. 28 Meet the Candidates forum sponsored by MyWoonsocket.com and 1380 WNRI. The free, open-to-the-public event will be held at , 267 Main St., 7 p.m. Add your questions to the comments here.

Register to vote - Oct. 7 is the deadline to register to vote for the Nov. 6 election, and Oct. 16 is the deadline to request a mail-in ballot. If you're an unaffiliated voter, you can vote as either Republican or Democratic in the Sept. 11 primary - just ask the poll worker to to dis-affiliate you on the way out after to return to independent status. This election season voters will also be required to show a voter ID.
