Would-Be Woonsocket Cat Burglar Leaves Out The Cat Part, Falls Three Stories

The following arrest information was provided by the Woonsocket Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A Woonsocket man scaling a fire escape in a drunken break-in attempt reached the window of a baby girl's room before her father interrupted, causing him to fall three stories July 13.

The shirtless, tattooed man with a shaved head, identified by the father at the Estes Street apartment as Christopher Porter, 24, of 70 West Park Place, tore the window blinds out as he plummeted, hit the ground and walked away. Moments later, the father said, Porter walked back to the building, where his brother also lives. The girl's parents said they'd considered not reporting the incident, hoping to deal with it themselves, but decided the next day to tell the police, according to Officer Michael Martufi's report.

The father said Porter and his brother, Brett, Porter, 21, who lives at the building's second-floor apartment, had been complaining about whoever had called police to their place during a disturbance there earlier that day, Martufi reported.

Martufi spoke with Brett, who said Christopher, his brother, had been very drunk that evening, and had returned to his West Park Place home after complaining of a "pretty bad fall" that night.

At Christopher's home, the would-be cat burglar came out when Martufi arrived and, after being read his rights, told Martufi he had been drunk and had attempted to open the wrong door. He later changed his story, saying he was on the fire escape and had tried climbing in his brother's apartment and got the wrong window.

Martufi noted in his report this was unlikely, as the window Christopher had attempted to climb into was not just on the wrong floor, but on the wrong side of the building. Also, Brett's apartment doesn't have a fire escape, Martufi noted in his report.

Martufi also reported observing marks and bruises on Christopher's hands and face.

Christopher Porter was charged with burglary, a felony. He also had a warrant out for his arrest for failing to appear in court out of Sixth District Court. He is due in Sixth District Court on the felony charge July 25 for a bail hearing.
