Woman Arrested for DUI offers Debit Card Instead of License

Woonsocket Police Officer James Dybala was patrolling the area of Market Square Sept. 28 at 1:28 a.m. when he saw a car exit the municipal lot in front of Ye Ole Fish and Chips without its lights on as it traveled onto the Truman Bypass.

When Dybala caught up with the car on the Bypass, made a traffic stop and approached the driver, later identified as Alysha Kane, 24, of 43 Rome Ave., Bellingham, MA, he noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle, according to his report. When Kane spoke, he said, the odor intensified. Dybala asked for her driver's license, and Kane offered her debit card instead. The officer asked if she'd had any alcohol, and Kane replied that she'd had three beers, according to his report.

Dybala conducted a field sobriety test, which Kane failed, showing a lack of smooth pursuit of her eyes, taking 12 steps too many and using her arms for balance during the walk and turn, and putting her foot down during the one-leg stand. Kane then told Dybala that while she'd only had three drinks, her size made her appear more drunk than she was. Later, she said she thought she had consumed five beers, according to Dybala's report.

Dybala arrested Kane, transporting her back to Woonsocket Police Headquarters where she refused to take a chemical test. Dybala charged her with DUI, first offense, blood alcohol unknown, and issued citations for refusing a chemical test, and for operating without her vehicle's lights when required.
