Lincoln Street Homes Evacuated During Thursday Gas Leak

Woonsocket Fire and Police officials evacuated a one-block radius surrounding 163 Lincoln St. Thursday morning after a construction company broke a gas line there.

Acting Fire Chief Tim Walsh said Deputy Fire Chief Paul Shatraw and Police Capt. Michael Lemoine evacuated the neighborhood, moving about 50 people to the Providence Street fire station through the Woonsocket Emergency Management Association.

Gas and Electricity Utility National Grid responded immediately, Walsh said, and fixed the leak.

Dep. Chief Roger Perreault said the call came in Thursday at 10:33 a.m., and the last person on the scene left at 11:43 a.m., by which time residents were back in their homes.

A report from Turnto10.com identifies the construction company as Bilray Demolition, which alleged the gas line was not marked. Dig Safe regulations require pre-marking digs and checking with the organization before starting work.
