Patch Picks: Top Five Donut Shops

Looking for donuts or just a good cup of java?

Not just for breakfast, donuts make a great anytime snack and we've made a list of the top spots to fill your craving in our area.  Let’s be honest, for us middle lifers—is there anything more Americana than the local donut shop where good food, conversation and friends adds up to making memories.

·         Betty’s Donuts & Coffee Shop is located at 3 Main St., the Park n’ Shop Plaza in Blackstone, MA, just over the Woonsocket line.  This family-owned coffee shop has retro decor, giving it that late fifties feel.  The menu consists of more than just breakfast. It  also has an excellent lunch and dinner menu as well, including daily specials.  Their personalized service must be what keeps the regulars coming back again and again, and explains why they’ve been in business for more than 30 years!  Great food and very reasonably prices makes it well worth going back.

·         Donut Express is located at 17 Front St.  This is a quaint little coffee shop with a large variety of donuts and muffins.  The staff is friendly and seems to know everyone’s name, giving the impression of  small-town donut shop.  Make sure you try one of the dozen flavored New England coffees they offer, or just a traditional coffee or tea, hot or iced.  You’ll be glad you did.

·         is located at 760 Cumberland Hill Rd.  Delicious donuts and muffins are their true forte, but as far as drinks, their Mocha Madness, either iced or frozen, is their specialty.  Also on the menu are bagels, pastries and a couple of traditional breakfast sandwiches.  Add to that lattes, cappuccinos, nine gourmet coffees, traditional coffee or tea, all hot or iced, and you have a wonderful combination of beverages to choose from.  Just looking for a cool drink? Then I suggest you try a Chillerchino, Froosh, or smoothie, or even one of their flavored lemonades or flavored iced teas.

·         I’m taking a little liberty here and counting as more than one of my five picks since there are five locations here in Woonsocket.  Even though it is a national chain, Dunkin’ Donuts still is great at what they do.  They offer a Classic breakfast sandwich, Wake-Up Wraps, flatbread sandwiches, including a light version egg white flatbread sandwich (for the health conscious,) an assortment of bagels, stuffed bagel twists, cookies (that are to die for,) apple pie, and of course a wide variety of donuts.  I have to say my new favorite is the blueberry cake donut.  If you’re looking for something to wet your whistle, then you won’t run out of choices here.  Try one of their eight specialty flavored coffees as is or made into a latte, cappuccino or turbo,or go for a traditional coffee, tea or even hot chocolate? Of course their frosty Coolattas will help keep you cool during these hot summer days.  With 15 flavors to choose from, including this summer’s new Cherry, you can get one flavor or their new Mixed Coolatta by choosing any two flavors.  For a large chain company, Dunkin takes its slogan seriously…”America runs on Dunkin!,” and so it does.
