THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2′ NEWS....

Despite director Marc Webb’s campaign of strong communication with fans – during which he posted a different set photo for every single day of filming on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – the plot of this sequel still (mostly) remains a mystery. Most of the clues so far, aside from Webb’s Twitter feed, have come from casting news, such as Chronicle star Dane DeHaan being cast as Harry Osborn.

The multiple superpowered villains of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 include Jamie Foxx as humble electrician Matt Dillon, who is destined to become the fearsome Electro, and Paul Giamatti as the bull-headed Russian mobster Aleksei Sytsevich , who later becomes the Rhino.
This week, Giamatti has been on the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival, promoting historical drama Parkland, in which he stars alongside Zac Efron (The Lucky One) and Tom Welling (Smallville). When asked by the Toronto Sun about his role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which wrapped its 100 days of filming a few weeks ago, Giamatti described his own portrayal of Rhino as being different to the comics, but added that he didn’t try to go for a dour, serious performance:
“He’s a Russian mobster. Russians are always good villains. I have an ability to just destroy things. My accent is pretty hammy. I loved doing it. it seemed to me like an opportunity to be as over-the-top hammy as possible… These things are kind of operatic, so you need big old hammy actors sometimes. But I personally like doing stuff like that and I liked comic books when I was a little kid.”

He also confirmed that there will be some sort of Rhino suit in the movie, though he didn’t elaborate as to what that means:
“I have a particular kind of suit, but I don’t think I’m supposed to talk about it.”

What could be interesting to see, given that we’ve already had four Spider-Man movies in recent years about Peter Parker learning how to use his powers and how his role as protector of New York affects the various relationships in his life, would be a movie in which the Sinister Six were not only the villains, but also the primary subjects of the story. After all, with at least two more Amazing Spider-Man movies already in development, an anti-Avengers format with the emphasis on Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and other members of the Sinister Six banding together to take on their mutual foe could be quite refreshing.

I think that Marc Webb might already be laying the groundwork for the Sinister Six when a teaser image from the set of the film showed an otherwise unremarkable building with a prominent red number 6 on the side. Given the introduction of multiple villains in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a Sinister Six movie seems like it might be on the cards, something that Giamatti – though he couldn’t offer confirmation – seems to agree with. Speaking in an interview with MTV, the actor said:
“I believe there’s a lot of stage-setting for the next film. There are several villains in this movie, and some of them are more foreground and important. Jamie Foxx is and stuff. A couple of us are more hanging around the background because I think there will be a bigger deal… I don’t actually know [if it's the Sinister Six], but that seems to be what they’re doing.”

For those unaware, the Sinister Six is an iconic clandestine organization of Spider-Man villains that – following the group’s comic book introduction in 1964 – has included characters like Doc Ock, Green Goblin, Lizard, Vulture, Electro and Rhino, among other science experiments-gone-wrong in the Spider-Man universe. Similar to superhero groups like The Avengers and Justice League, whenever Spidey’s opponents band together to take down their web-slinging archenemy, dysfunction amongst their own ranks can be as much a problem for them as the do-gooder whom they’re supposed to be focusing their time and effort to take down. In other words: a Sinister Six-oriented storyline is something that could be fun to see explored onscreen.

Are you hoping that the Sinister Six will be on the cards in Spider-Man’s future, or would you prefer each film to focus on a particular bad guy and give them plenty of screen time? Tell me which direction you think this series is heading in the comments.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in theaters on May 2nd, 2014.
