Cote Contests Savings Allowing Supplemental Tax

Marc Cote (D- Dist. 24, Woonsocket, North Smithfield) spoke during the Woonsocket Budget Commission's public comment segment Monday, contesting the legitimacy of sending out supplemental tax bills.

Cote said savings realized using "enactments" skirted the intent of the supplemental tax bill law (which Cote sponsored and voted to approve) which required $3.7 million of savings in union negotiations before allowing supplemental tax bills to be sent out.

Budget Commission Counsel Edward Alves said he's confident the enactments, changes the Commission made to the police union contract outside negotiations, would stand in court.
