Woonsocket Senator Spearheads Bill to Tax For-Profit Hospitals

The bill was approved after the state's first for-profit hospital was created.

The state Senate on Thursday passed legislation guaranteeing a community's right to tax for-profit hospitals.

The bill was sponsored by Woonsocket State Sen. Roger Picard (D-Dist. 20).

Last year, Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket was sold to California-based Prime Healthcare Services, creating the state's first-profit hospital.

"Prime has been very forthright since the beginning about their expectation to be a city taxpayer, but our laws should be clarified for this for any future hospital conversions," Picard said in a statement. "We need to say that for-profit hospitals are subject to tax, and give municipalities the means to collect that tax."
