Woonsocket Shaws Among Six to Close in August

Shaws Supermarket will close its Woonsocket store and five other southern New England locations Aug. 3.

According to Boston.com, the West Bridgewater, CT based company is closing the Woonsocket store along with stores in Fall River, Stoughton, Fairhaven, Taunton in MA and in Westerly, RI. The closed stores have not been profitable for some time, the company noted in a release, which has not yet been posted to the supermarket's website or Facebook page.

But customers are commenting on and communicating with Shaws on the subject there. Connie Saint asked if the Woonsocket store was closing after hearing the news that Shaws is closing some stores. The company replied it would close the Woonsocket store.

"We strive to ensure the success of all our stores, however, it is occasionally necessary for us to close those that are not meeting company goals. As a company and as responsible business owners, we need to position ourselves to be profitable," the company wrote to Saint.

"While the decision to close a store is always difficult—given the impact on associates and customers—it was made only after careful evaluation and was guided by what is best for the company’s ongoing success and future growth," the company wrote about the closings.
