Lucien J. Pelletier: Navy Vet of Normandy Invasion, Former Albion Deputy Fire Chief

Lucien J. Pelletier, 90, formerly of School St., Albion, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, according to Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home.

He was the loving husband of Ida I. (Floyd) Pelletier. They were married on September 27, 1944.

Born and raised in Albion, he was a son of the late Domina and Clarinda (Lusignan) Pelletier.

Mr. Pelletier served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a Boatswain’s Mate First Class on the LCT 590 which was one of the first vessels to land at Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944.

Following his service to his country Mr. Pelletier returned to Rhode Island with his new bride, Ida, whom he met and married during his time in the service in Virginia. He was employed at MicroFibers Inc. in Pawtucket for over 30 years until retiring in 1985. He had also worked at Brown & Sharp in his earlier years.

Mr. Pelletier served as the Deputy Chief of the Albion Fire Department and was the Past Commander of the Dion-Pelletier Post #90 American Legion in Albion. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Ambrose Parish and a member of the Manville-Albion Golden Agers, and the Tenants Association at Lincoln Manor.

Lucien was a staunch fan of all New England sports teams (especially the Boston Celtics) and also the Detroit Tigers. He had a natural inclination for being able to build anything.

Lucien will be remembered as a devoted father and grandfather.

In addition to his wife of 68 years, he is survived by two sons Gerald J. Pelletier, and his wife Cheryl, of Charlotte, North Carolina and Gary B. Pelletier, and his wife Janice, of Warwick. He was the brother of Lucienne Goudreau of Pawtucket and the late Royal Pelletier, Bertrand Pelletier and Gerald Pelletier (who was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge in WWII), and Constance Pelletier. He is also survived by four grandchildren Scott Pelletier, Kellie Macdonald, Brian Pelletier and Kimberly Pelletier, 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Ambrose Church, School St., Albion. Burial with military honors will follow in the parish cemetery. Visiting hours are Wednesday morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m., prior to Mass, in the Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home, 71 Central St., Manville.
