GrowUp! Garden Kicks Off with Community Event

Over 20 people, including youth volunteers from Beacon Charter High School for the Arts, Daisy Troop 520 and Junior Girl Scout Troop 741 came together on May 3rd to get the GrowUp Community Garden ready for its sixth season. “It was great to see the garden filled with so many children and families”, said longtime gardener and volunteer Bob Neubauer.  In addition to many families and individuals, several local organizations will be maintaining plots this year, including NRI Community Services, Thundermist Health Center, and the RI Food Bank.

The GrowUp garden is located adjacent to the Woonsocket Harris Public Library on land donated by the Pawtucket YMCA, Woonsocket Branch.  Some 4’x10’ raised beds are still available for rent for a nominal fee to any community member who wishes to grow food and herbs. Gardeners are required to donate 10% of their plot’s yield to local food pantries.  Last year, over 300 lbs of food was donated to families and individuals in need. For more information, please contact Wendy Pires at 401-235-6096 or wpires@famresri.org. Information about the garden is also available by visiting Family Resources Community Action’s website at www.famresri.org
