Police Log: Dangerous Pocket Knife

The following arrest information was supplied by the Woonsocket Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A 15-year-old high school student, whose name was not released, faces a charge of possession of a dangerous weapon after he allegedly brought a pocket knife to school. Police arrested him Wednesday afternoon.

Officer David Chattman, whose beat is Woonsocket High School, allegedly spotted a knife sticking out of the boy's pocket as he walked through a hallway area of the building known as Time Square. The officer took the knife and led the boy to the front office. Chattman measured the knife at the office, and found the blade to be three and a half inches long.

The boy allegedly told the officer and school administrators that he brought the knife to school because he heard other students intended to beat him, and he wanted to defend himself. Assistant Principal Linda Kuras suspended him from school for five days.

A 15-year-old student at Woonsocket Middle School, whose name was not released, faces a charge of possession of marijuana. Police arrested him Wednesday at 9:56 a.m. at the middle school's Hamlet Building.

An investigation began Wednesday morning, after a substitute teacher told Assistant Principal Robert Picard he could smell the aroma of marijuana coming from a student's locker. Picard then opened the locker and found "a small blunt containing a leafy green substance," according to police reports.

Picard then called the student using the locker to his office, and the student allegedly admitted the marijuana belonged to him. Picard then sent the student to the nurse's office because he believed the student had already indulged in the locker stash.

School administrators also called Woonsocket police. When Officer Jaime Martin arrived, he used a test kit to confirm the green leafy substance was marijuana. The officer took the boy to the police station, where he was charged. He was later released to the custody of his mother.
