Police Log: Big mouth faces charges

The following arrest information was supplied by the Woonsocket Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Woonsocket teen found himself under arrest after he persistently taunted officers with obnoxious remarks while they conducted an investigation.

The 14-year-old boy, whose name was not released, faces charges of obstructing an officer in performance of his duties and use of tobacco by a minor.

Shortly after 7 p.m. April 16, police went to Second Avenue to assist EMTs who were taking a nine-month-old boy to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence. The infant had tumbled out of a stroller and hit his head on concrete stairs.  While police questioned neighbors as to what happened, two 14-year-old boys arrived on the scene and began calling the officers "cookie monsters."

When Officer Christopher Bouvier asked the two boys if they saw what happened, they replied with jeering remarks, saying the child fell from a second story window. One of them pointed at the police cruiser and said "Your car smells like donuts." As officers continued their investigation, the boys kept up their barrage of jibes. One rode about on a scooter calling out "Look at me, I'm smoking crack," and "I'm smoking weed and you can't do anything."

"Only a chain link fence seperated the crime scene from their petulant commentary," reads the police report.

At one point a woman came out of an apartment and told her son to go home. She apologized to the officers and told them her son's friend was a bad influence. One of the officers then told the remaining boy to leave the area. He refused, and continued with "a loud diatribe."

At that point an officer arrested him and placed him in the back of a cruiser while the police investigation continued. Police also searched his pockets and found a pack of Newports and a lighter, leading to a charge of illegal tobacco use.

The youth was taken to the police station and booked. Officers then called his mother to pick him up.
