Presentation of "Main Street Approach" held at 6:30 p.m. at Museum of Work and Culture.
Roger Williams University Professor Jeremy Wells and his students will make their case for using the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Approach in Woonsocket tonight, 6:30 p.m. at the Museum of Work and Culture. Wells and his students, who have been studying the downtown Woonsocket/Main Street area, chose the Main Street Approach, "...because no other downtown revitalization approach has such a long track record of success, information and support," Wells wrote in a recent release. Roger Williams' assistance comes via a pilot program from the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) marshaling the university's Community Partnerships Center on the city's languishing downtown center. Mayor Leo Fontaine …

Yvette Ayotte organized a little holiday cheer Dec. 20.
Yvette Ayotte and twelve of her friends thought Woonsocket could use a holiday pick-me-up, so they got together to do a little caroling Thursday night. "We feel the city could use a little boost," said Ayotte, so they got together at 6 p.m. Dec. 20 at the beginning of Oak Grove, dressed in coats, hats and scarves, and belted out a few rounds of 'Jingle Bells" for their neighbors. "There were twelve of us and we had a blast! So did the residents, they came outside and sang with us and thanked us," said Ayotte.

Patient hospitalized after contaminated steroid shot linked to national outbreak.
Woonsocket has the unenviable distinction of being the first spot in Rhode Island with a case of meningitis in the nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak from contaminated steroid injections made in Framingham, MA. The patient, a woman in her forties from Providence County, received a spinal injection at Ocean State Pain Management of Woonsocket on Sept. 22. She is hospitalized and receiving treatment, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health. Another Rhode Island facility, New England Anesthesiology, which has offices in Warwick and East Greenwich ― received medication from some of three lots recalled by New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Massachusetts. These lots have been linked to a multi-state outbreak of …

The following arrest information was supplied by the Woonsocket Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
The destinations on the used GPS Eric Wakely, 20, of 444 Willow St., apt. 21, was trying to sell didn't correspond with any of the destinations in his life, but they did match up with those of the guy who said it was stolen. On Sept. 22, at 2:38 p.m., officers were dispatched to Mt. St. Charles Avenue for a report of a suspicious person selling GPS units. When they arrived, they found Wakely on Bernon Street, headed home. Wakely told officers he had sold a GPS belonging to his girlfriend, because he no longer drives and doesn't use it. He said he had sold the GPS for $50, and showed police a series of text messages to the man he'd sold it to. Officers contacted the man Wakely had sold the GPS to and met with him to examine the device, …

Mayor, United Veterans Council announce noon stop at monument.
Place Jolicoeur, the focus of an ideological but not yet legal battle between the city and the Freedom From Religion Foundation, will be the last stop on Woonsocket's annual Memorial Day Parade. This morning, Mayor Leo Fontaine's office and the United Veterans Council announced a final wreath laying ceremony at the memorial at 5 Cumberland Hill Road at noon Monday. The site, which sits in front of Woonsocket Fire Department Headquarters, was the subject of a challenge from the FFRF demanding removal of religious symbols from the Place Jolicoeur memorial and Fire Department website earlier this month. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the corner of Clinton and Cumberland Streets. Participants marching in the parade will gather behind the …
