Truck Wedged Under Main Street Rail Bridge Friday Morning

Second truck this month travels low-clearance stretch at its peril.

  Another truck ran afoul of the 12' clearance under the Main Street rail bridge this morning.  Woonsocket Police Information Officer Det. Jamie Paone said the police department received a call about the truck at about 11:17 a.m., and it was still stuck as of noon. Jonathan Hayes, who walked by the site, said it had been cleared by about 12:10 p.m. Paone said this wayward vehicle was a Ryder truck, likely a rental driven by someone who isn't experienced with large vehicles. There was no immediate information on the driver's identity or whether the person will be citied for the mishap. She said a tow truck company was called to free the vehicle. Apparently, we can't rely on drivers to pay attention to the height limits. Enough is enough! Just make it illegal for trucks of a certain height to take that route and charge high fines when they get wedged. They don't have to use that route. Whether it causes an inconvenience or not is immaterial - the compromise of the bridge structure from all these hits should be the only consideration.   more ›

UPDATE: Truck Sticks Under Main Street Rail Bridge, Blocking Morning Traffic

Tractor-trailer's rig freed from low-clearance pitfall with tow truck.

  A tractor-trailer truck driver missed several warning signs on Main Street this morning, sticking his rig under the Main Street Rail bridge and blocking traffic for about three and a half hours. The driver, Gerald Emerson of Tennessee, drove his truck under the bridge near Chan's Restaurant at about 7:26 a.m. this morning, according to Woonsocket Police Public Information Officer Jamie Paone. Two officers responded to the bridge to direct traffic away from the site while the tow truck was removed from the tight spot. I think it has to do with the dip under the bridge. The trucks actually drive under the bridge at the right hight, but if the truck is long it may not make the dip. Just a thought.   more ›
