Dual House Bills Eliminate Need for Explanation on Emergency Mail Ballots

Woonsocket's Casey, Phillips co-sponsored bills.

  The Rhode Island House of Representatives today passed two bills sponsored by Rep. Marvin L. Abney (D-Dist 73, Newport, Middletown) that together would eliminate the requirement that voters provide an explanation when applying for an emergency mail ballot. “During the last days before an election, any number of circumstances could come up that might force someone to apply for an emergency mail ballot, and right now the requirements for an excuse are too restrictive,” said RepresentativeAbney. “Expanding the emergency mail ballot system will help ensure that every registered voter gets the chance to cast a ballot.” The first bill, (2013 H 5567), would change Rhode Island’s emergency mail ballot law so that a voter’s reason for applying …

Casey Sworn In At State House New Year's Day

New legislator takes oath of office with 74 fellow representatives.

  Rep. Stephen M. Casey (D – Dist. 50) was formally sworn into office New Year's Day as the 2013-2014 session of the Rhode Island General Assembly convened. Casey was one of 16 new members of the House of Representatives who took the oath of office, which was administered to all 75 House members by the Rhode Island Secretary of State, A. Ralph Mollis, according to a State House news release. The House of Representatives began its legislative year with a program of activities that included the re-election of Rep. Gordon D. Fox as the Speaker of the House. Casey, a Woonsocket firefighter, starts his first term in the General Assembly. To get there, he bested former Democratic Rep.
