Ninety percent of funds to aid low-income families in paying rent, heat, prescriptions.
Family Resources Community Action (FRCA) announced today it raised $20,300 during the 2012 Salvation Army Kettle Campaign. Tracey Abrams, development & communications director at FRCA, credited the generosity of local residents and the hard work of volunteers who collected for the kettle drives in front of local stores. "FRCA and the Salvation Army extend their appreciation to the 87 volunteers who put in more than 1,000 hours staffing kettles at local stores," reads a release from the organization. This year they've raised about $200 more than last year, said Abrams. The year before that, the drive collected $20,000 for the first time, doubling the collections of previous drives. We may not want to believe it, but the holiday season is nearly upon us. With only two weeks until Thanksgiving — and just 43 days left 'til Christmas — now is the time to plan for holiday meals, arrange for guests and join the masses at the mall. More importantly, it's also time to think of those less fortunate. While help is needed throughout the year, the holiday season helps remind us to lend a helping hand whenever we can. Soon, Santa's helpers will be ringing their bells in front of the supermarket and local food pantries will be holding frequent food drives. Hurricane Irene has passed, but many in our area are still working to clean up and get back on track. Here are some ways that you can get involved in helping now, and in future emergency situations: 1) ServeCorps Disaster Team: ServeRI, the state's hub for volunteer recruitment, has been organizing teams to assist with post-Irene cleanup. Call 401-331-2298 to see how you can still help. You can also consider becoming a member of the ServeCorps Disaster Team, a group of volunteers who are trained to help state and local municipalities in disaster preparation, response and recovery.
