Thursday: Autumnfest, Commission, Race Against Racism, Veterans Housing

Welcome to Thursday, Woonsocket, and check out these things to know:

  Autumnfest - Autumnfest events continue today with the opening of the Midway by Fanelli Amusements at World War II Memorial Park, with a third more games this year than last time. The Midway opening will coincide with a fundraiser, "Bands for the fans" at the AutumnfestBeergarden along East School Street, providing entertainment for a $5 cover this evening. Register for Race - It is not too late to register the second Race Against Racism 5K run/walk being held during Woonsocket's annual Autumnfest celebration on Sunday October 7, 2012.  On race day, registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K will start at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $25 and $27 the day of the race. Autumfest Kicks Off Tonight With Grand Marshal Ceremony

Tickets to dinner ceremony are $15 at the door.

  Autumnfest, Woonsocket's biggest annual celebration, gets started tonight with the Autumnfest Grand Marshal Ceremony at 6 p.m. at St. Ann Arts and Cultural Center. Mayor Leo Fontaine will officially present Autumnfest Grand Marshal Bob Picard with the first Autmnfest button during the dinner ceremony. The event will be catered by Gary McLaughlin of Deli Encounters, the long-time caterer for the Grand Marshal Ceremony, Picard said. Picard, chairman of Woonsocket Senior Services and a long-time Rotary member, should draw a big crowd to this year's ceremony, said Autumnfest organizer Tim Paul. Friday's Your Last Chance For Early Pricing To Enter Race Against Racism 5K

  Early registration for the Race Against Racism5K run/walk Oct. 7 during Autumnfest is about to end. Early sign-up pricing for the Race Against Racism at Autumnfest is $22 until Sept. 21. After that, the entry fee is $25, and $27 the day of the race. A race t-shirt is also available for those who register in advance. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers. First place age division winners are also awarded for male and female finishers (no double dipping). Proceeds from the race will support community and racial justice efforts. Volunteers Sought For Race Against Racism at Autumnfest

Many opportunities to support the 5K run/walk on Oct. 7

  Volunteers are needed to support the Race Against Racism on Sunday Oct. 7. This year's 5K run/walk will be held during Woonsocket's annual Autumnfest celebration. A variety of positions are available for volunteers the day of the race from 7 to 11 a.m.   Volunteers are needed in the following areas: race set up, registration, water station, on-course guide, finish line, and clean up.  A volunteer form is available on the Race Against Racism website at www.raceagainstracismri.org. Race Against Racism is intended to unite people of all races, demonstrate our community's commitment to eliminating racism, and celebrate our diversity. There's a good chance that means "proceeds will go to the YWCA", since the elimination of racism is the new(-ish) goal of the YWCA, nationally. I'm not sure exactly what they're doing to eliminate racism, what programs they have, etc., maybe someone else can answer that. But they are putting language about racial justice on all their brochures, websites, and fundraising efforts, so I think it's a…   more ›
