New Pope Francis I Elected: Catholic Priests in Woonsocket React

White smoke appeared on Wednesday, signaling the conclave had chosen Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio the new Catholic Church head. Local church leaders responded.

  White smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel Wednesday, signaling the election of Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope, taking the name Francis.  Cheers rang out from the crowd gathered at Vatican City and the buzz spread as quickly as the by-the-second news cycle could carry it. In Woonsocket, priests took the news of the reportedly humble priest's selection and his apparently modest demeanor as a sign of hope. Francis is reportedly the Jesuit pope, the first South American pope and also the first pope to (possibly) take his name after St. Francis of Assisi. Woonsocket Priest Resigns With 'Profound Remorse' For Sexual Misconduct

  Update: Thirty years ago, Rev. Monsignor John Allard was assigned at Immaculate Conception in Cranston. Turnto10.com reports the priest has admitted to an improper relationship with a boy in 1981 at the church. Rev. Monsignor John Allard of St. Agatha and Precious Blood Parishes has resigned after an allegation of sexual misconduct with a minor more than 30 years ago.  According to a release posted by The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence on their website, the priest "has taken responsibility for his actions and has expressed his profound remorse for the harm he has caused." Woonsocket Priest Defrocked For Sexual Misconduct Allegation

Rev. Timothy Gorton removed after recent report of incidents 30 years ago.

  The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence has announced Rev. Timothy Gorton of Precious Blood Parish in Woonsocket has been removed from his duties after a recent allegation of sexual misconduct 30 years ago. “The Diocese of Providence takes very seriously allegations of sexual abuse by a member of the Church. When allegations of misconduct by Rev. Timothy Gorton were received by the Diocese, allegations that date from approximately 30 years ago, law enforcement officials were notified immediately," reads the Diocese's statement. The Woonsocket Call, which has interviewed the victim, Gorton's nephew, reports there are no charges from the reported incidents from the Narragansett Police Department. James, You have my sincere sympathy. I know people who have survived childhood abuse of all kinds. Even just the fear that you were maybe sexually abused is such a heavy burden! God bless you in your healing. But "defrocked" isn't the same thing as "removed."
