Update 12:22 p.m.: A blown transformer caused by a mylar balloon is to blame for a power outage in Woonsocket that briefly cut power to about 3,700 customers this morning. Woonsocket Police report the transformer outage, which happened at about 11 a.m. Sunday morning, was repaired within the hour. Debbie Drew, spokesperson National Grid, said a mylar baloon came in contact with electricity lines on Logee Street, causing the damage to the transformer and cutting power to the area. Though some might regard mylar balloons as harmless, "Not to electrical equipment," Drew said. Most customers' power restored, three downed trees, four downed wires.
Woonsocket weathered Hurricane Sandy with minimal damage thanks to its inland geography - suffering power outages for about a day, with only three downed trees. By mid-morning, National Grid had restored power to more than 74,000 homes and businesses, more than 60 percent of the approximately 122,000 customers across the state who were in the dark after the storm, according to a release from the utility. Woonsocket is among the communities restored to service. According to Fire Chief Gary Lataille, the city's emergency management director, by 11 a.m., National Grid had reported there were only five customers in the city without power. National Grid's map shows about 3,483 without power, crews to return to task after winds subside.
Update - 7:32 p.m.: National Grid reports repair crews will have to take a renewed stab at restoring power in Woonsocket and other areas tomorrow morning after the worst of the storm has passed. Charlotte McCormack, spokesperson for National Grid, said that crews were taken in hours ago after winds reached speeds greater than 30 mph. Crews have been focused on any work that could be done without putting staff up in the utility's bucket trucks, "specifically for safety reasons," McCormack said. She said according to reports, the damage was caused by downed wires and branches. Driver who fell asleep at wheel before car destroyed transformers was not injured.
A woman who fell asleep at the wheel early Sunday, crashing her car into a series of transformers and cutting power to a swath of the Diamond Hill Road area has been cited by Woonsocket Police. Bethany Paul, 27, of Woonsocket was driving a grey 2004 Mitsubishi Sunday at 1 a.m. on Diamond Hill Road when she fell asleep at the wheel, said Det. Sgt. Matt Ryan. Ryan said Paul's car collided with a pole and a series of transformers near the road, destroying three of the transformers.
