Phillips Working to Find Ways Communities Can Share Services

The Joint Commission on Shared Municipal Services has appointed two advisory committees to support its first steps toward helping cities and towns cut costs by working together to provide municipal services.

The Joint Commission on Shared Municipal Services has appointed two advisory committees to support its first steps toward helping cities and towns cut costs by working together to provide municipal services. The commission, which is co-chaired by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist.12, Middletown, Newport, Little Compton, Tiverton) and Rep. Robert D. Phillips (D-Dist. 51, Woonsocket, Cumberland), has announced the appointment of a Public Safety Dispatch Service Advisory Committee and a Tax Collection Service Advisory Committee, since public safety dispatch and tax collection were among the services that legislators have identified as having the greatest potential for sharing and saving money for municipalities. Each advisory committee consists…

Rep. Phillips To Co-Chair Joint Commission on Shared Municipal Services

Representative faces tough challenge in aligning municipal interests.

Rep. Robert D. Phillips (D – Dist. 51, Woonsocket, Cumberland) has been appointed to the position of co-chairman of the Joint Commission on Shared Municipal Services. “This is a really great opportunity for me to dive into a subject that cities and towns across the state have been waiting to learn more about,” Representative Phillips said. His work is cut out for him, according to RINPR's Scott McKay, who notes steep challenges to consolidating services in the state, where details bedevil best intentions.   “Communities have been debating the pros and cons of shared municipal services for some time now, and it’s especially important to have these discussions when almost every municipality in this state is struggling to find economic …

Team Clean Kids Honored For Their Cleanup Efforts

Olly's Pizza offers discount pizza, hospitality to group.

Monte Calvario Church, located on North Main Street, has organized a weekly street cleanup effort by their young members. Under the direction of Stephanie Ortega, about 13 members of the church have met on Saturday mornings since the start of the summer, cleaning several streets each week. When Rep. Bob Phillips (D-Dist. 51) was made aware of this valuable community service, he offered to sponsor a pizza party for those involved as a reward and in recognition of their efforts. The party was held at Olly's Pizza on Oct. 5, with owner Peter Vosdagalis graciously offering special pricing and cheerfully serving the group, which has named itself "Team Clean." The group will continue their efforts every other week during the school year. "This …
