New members will get nominated by mayor, approved by City Council in November.
Come November 2013, new Woonsocket School Committee members will get appointed to the board instead of elected. City voters agreed to make the switch, casting approve votes on Question 8 — Amendments to the Woonsocket Home Rule Charter:"Shall the City of Woonsocket Home Rule Charter, Chapter XIV, be amended to provide for an appointed School Committee?" Voters approved the measure with a 57 percent majority - 6,098 in favor to 4,582 opposed. There were 1,455 "under votes" - people who declined to vote one way or another on the question. With that move decided, said Mayor Leo Fontaine, "Next November, whoever is elected Mayor at that point would be responsible for coming up with the appointments for submitting to the council for approval…

Woonsocket Patch asked voters who they supported for president, and why.
The election is over, and while the majority of Woonsocket voters sided with President Barack Obama (Obama: 7,978, Romney: 4,111) with a 64 percent majority, not all did, and the outcome continues to draw comments on Woonsocket Patch. Today, we've got a few opinions on each side of the Romney/Obama question from election day with faces to match, including one charming nonagenarian voter (We're featuring her photo for that, not because she voted for Obama): At Crepeau Court Nov. 6, Bertha Julevich, accompanied by her son, Mark, was out to cast her vote for Obama. Bertha didn't mince words. "I'm an old lady," she announced cheerfully. She turns 99 in December. Bertha said she wanted to live up to her responsibility as a citizen. "I had to …

Canvassers: Asking write-in voters to print Brien's first name won't work.
Jon Brien's write-in campaign for Dist. 50 asks voters to print his first name on the ballot Nov. 6, but the Board of Canvassers has stated voters will need to write in his full name for it to count. "You've got to have the last name," for your candidate when you're casting a write-in ballot, said Henri Cyr, Board of Canvassers election clerk. Brien's billboard sign, mounted on a trailer, was parked next to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church on Park Ave. Thursday afternoon. The sign shows how voters who want to cast their ballot for Jon Brien can do so, but instead of instructing them to use his full name, the sign tells voters to write in "Jon". "I don't know why he's doing it," Cyr said. He said Brien has been told voters will need to …

Question 4 on the Nov. 6 ballot asks residents whether the state should borrow $94 million to build a new facility and renovate the existing one.
Edward Hanrahan has lived at the Rhode Island Veterans Home for 8 years. He commends the staff for the service and care he receives, both of which he says are outstanding. What is not is the facility he lives in. "We're damn glad to be here on the whole; we get excellent care," the World War II veteran and bronze star winner said. "But we do need a new home. It's an old building ... problems with the sewers, problems with the pipes, and so many leaks in the roof. Buildings this old ... very few still standing." The Veterans Home on Metacom Avenue in Bristol was built in 1954 and was last renovated in 1969, according to state Rep. Ray Gallison, who hosted an event at the home Tuesday to rally support for Question 4 on the Nov. 6 ballot, …

Letter sent to Democratic Dist. 50 Candidate Stephen Casey dispels write-in opponent's claim of invalid candidacy.
Stephen Casey, Democratic candidate for Dist. 50, has not violated the Hatch Act, according to a ruling by the Office of Special Counsel in Washington, DC, dispelling Rep. Jon Brien's (D-Dist. 50) claim that his run was illegal. Brien (D-Dist. 50) filed a Hatch Act complaint against Casey Sept. 27, claiming he violated the law as a candidate working for the Woonsocket Fire Department, which accepts federal funding for training. The Hatch Act limits political activities of federal employees on and off duty. Casey's campaign, which won against Brien by a 52-vote majority, might have violated the Hatch Act if his job as a firefighter directly benefited from federal funding. But on Tuesday, Leslie J. Gogan, an attorney with the Hatch Act …

President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney squared off in the third and final presidential debate on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Here's how Rhode Island Republicans and Democrats reacted.
As we entered the final presidential debate Monday, both parties were looking for a clear victory. But according to our Rhode Island political influencers, neither party felt their candidate was the dominant winner in the debate. That's the major finding of the Red and Blue Rhody flash poll sent out to local political influencers immediately after the debate ended Monday night. For the third and final time President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney came face to face for a presidential debate on Monday night in Florida. Obama and Romney faced off on Oct. 22 at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida with CBS's Bob Schieffer moderating the debate. The format for the debate was identical to the first presidential debate and …
Monday night's foreign policy debate in Florida was the last time the two candidates will meet before the election Nov. 6.
It might be remembered as the "bayonets and horses" debate. Or it could be known as the "attacking me is not an agenda" debate. Either way, it was the final debate of the 2012 Presidential election. So, we ask you one last time: who won? More importantly, did the arguments of either candidate sway you? And what did you think of moderater Bob Schieffer?
