Mounties Hold Off Townies In Volleyball Showdown

The Mt. St. Charles Academy girls' volleyball team squeezed out a 3-0 victory (26-24, 25-21, 25-23) Thursday night over East Providence to cement its position as the top team in Division I-South.

Just a little better, three times. A poised and talented Mount St. Charles Academy girls’ volleyball team solidified its hold on first place in the Division I-North standings by surviving a stiff challenge from host East Providence High, 3-0, before a large crowd Thursday night. The Mounties prevailed by narrow margins of 26-24, 25-21 and 25-23, to improve to 8-0 in divisional play this fall and 9-0 overall. The second-place Townies dropped to 6-2 in league action and 8-2 on the year. Setter Carissa Gould dished out 37 assists, while hitters Kelsey Lace (13), Kim D’Alessandro (9) Danielle Lippacher (7) and Meaghan Walsh (5) combined for 34 kills as Mt. St. Charles rallied from late deficits in all three games to complete a two-match …

Girl's Volleyball: Mountie Streak Continues With 3-0 Win Over Lincoln

Mount St. Charles' undefeated season rolls on as the Mounties defeat Lincoln 3-0, and move to 8-0 for the season.

Mount St. Charles girls volleyball continued their streak yesterday, taking down Lincoln to secure their eighth win of the season with a convincing 3-0 victory. Game one started out tough for MSC. Unforced errors and defensive mistakes were met with solid playing by Lincoln. With MSC clinging to a one point lead at 12-11, setter Carissa Gould started to lean on Senior outside hitter Kelsey Lace. Lace, one of the Mounties most consistent power hitters, delivered and had five kills down the stretch. Meaghan Walsh finished game one with a spike and Mount St. Charles took the first match, 25-16. "I think the first game we were a little surprised. So I think Carissa got her involved a little bit to get us out of that first game," said MSC Head …

Girl's Volleyball: Ponaganset Runs Into the Mountie Buzzsaw; MSC wins 3-1

Ponaganset, playing without a full team, scrapes one out against the Mounties, but falls 3-1.

Mount St. Charles added another win to their undefeated season, beating Ponaganset 3-1 in a Division I girl's volleyball match on Thursday. The Chieftains were coming off a tough loss against East Providence in a five game match, in which their star setter Taylor Stevens suffered an injury. Stevens was injured diving for a ball, on which she landed on her back and head. She did not suffer a concussion but had serious discomfort in her neck and upper back going into this match against the Mounties. Ponaganset Coach Sue Stevens kept her other setters ready, unsure of how much her player would be hampered by the injury.  The first game was taken handily by the Mounties, who were solid in all phases of the game. Stevens, who is an effective …

Girls Volleyball: Mounties Fly Past Falcons

Mount Saint Charles defeats Cranston West 3-0.

Mount Saint Charles proved they are a force to be reckoned with in Division I girls volleyball on Monday night when they dismantled Cranston West on the road. They won the contest 3-0. The first game was pure dominance by the Mounties. They had three scoring streaks in the game, totaling 23-2. They got all but two of the necessary 25 points to win a game, in their 8-0, 8-1, and 7-1 runs throughout the game. After trailing 3-1, Mount notched eight consecutive points and never looked back. After the Falcons scored, cutting the lead to 9-4, they reeled off a 8-1 run, upping the lead to 17-5. A 7-1 run finished the game, as they won it 25-7. The Falcons regrouped and the second game was much more competitive. The biggest lead for either team …

Girls Volleyball: Mounties Bounce Back, Winning Three Straight After One Loss To The Townies

Kelsey Lace and Danielle Lippacher dominate play at the net, lifting Mount St. Charles to a 3-1 victory over East Providence.

East Providence travelled to Mount St. Charles for a well-matched Division I girls volleyball match-up on Wednesday, but watched an early lead slip away as the MSC girls battled upwards through some tight games. The Townies jumped out to a score of 8-4 early on, but that lead was quickly erased by the Mounties who tied the score at eight apiece. The Townies stayed poised and played clean volleyball, staying away from errors and playing tough defense. This coupled with the erratic hitting of the Mounties led to a 19-13 lead for East Providence. Serves by Kim D'Alessandro enabled the Mounties to once again shrink the lead down to two, but the Townies rallied and put game one away on a kill down the line from Leah Drolet on a quick-set. The …

Girls Volleyball: Mount Ready For Another Title Run

Despite graduating five starters, the Mount St. Charles girls volleyball team is geared up for another shot at the state championship.

Despite graduating five talented players from last year’s team, Mount St. Charles Academy is expected to contend again for the girls volleyball Division I state title. Gone from last year’s squad are middle blocker Maria Saia, outside hitter Tessa Jacobs, right side hitter Lauren Palazzini, middle blocker Tara Murray and libero Sarah Manupelli. Saia, Jacobs and Palazzini garnered post-season honors. Not many programs could lose players of that caliber and sustain an elite level of performance, but not many programs have the depth and ability to groom young players that Mount has. Leading the Mounties this season will be senior outside hitter Kelsey Lace. She was the only non-senior to be named first team all-state last year. Senior Jessie …
