MSC made an early error, but went on to score three unanswered goals, while outshooting the Falcons 63-14.
MSC faced off against Cranston West on Monday, looking to rebound from a tough 3-2 loss to Bishop Hendricken. The Mounties were dominant, outshooting the Falcons by a 5-1 ratio on their way to a 3-1 victory MSC controlled play early in the game, but made a careless turnover in the neutral zone during a line change. The Falcons took advantage and DaSilva scored his second goal of the season at 5:19 in the first period, giving West 1-0 lead. "I feel bad for the goaltender. The first shot he saw was one that he waited five minutes for and we got caught in a line change. And it's always tough when the first one goes in," MSC Coach David Belisle said. Unfortunately for the Falcons, they returned the favor later in the period with a miscue of …

Match called after scoreless draw, to continue Tuesday.
Eighty minutes and nothing to show for it. Yet. Mt. St. Charles Academy girls' soccer team battled Tiverton High to a 0-0 deadlock Monday afternoon at home in a quarterfinal-round match of the Division II state playoffs. The game was called just before overtime as darkness began to set in. The squads will return to Woonsocket on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. for two 10-minute overtime periods. If the fourth-seeded Mounties (13-4-1) and fifth-seeded Tigers (11-5-2) are tied at the conclusion of those sessions, the victor will be determined in a shootout (presumably before darkness falls again.) Tuesday’s survivor will earn a respite only until Thursday when it will journey to East Greenwich High to face top-seeded Exeter-West Greenwich …

Ponaganset, playing without a full team, scrapes one out against the Mounties, but falls 3-1.
Mount St. Charles added another win to their undefeated season, beating Ponaganset 3-1 in a Division I girl's volleyball match on Thursday. The Chieftains were coming off a tough loss against East Providence in a five game match, in which their star setter Taylor Stevens suffered an injury. Stevens was injured diving for a ball, on which she landed on her back and head. She did not suffer a concussion but had serious discomfort in her neck and upper back going into this match against the Mounties. Ponaganset Coach Sue Stevens kept her other setters ready, unsure of how much her player would be hampered by the injury. The first game was taken handily by the Mounties, who were solid in all phases of the game. Stevens, who is an effective …

Mount Saint Charles defeats Cranston West 3-0.
Mount Saint Charles proved they are a force to be reckoned with in Division I girls volleyball on Monday night when they dismantled Cranston West on the road. They won the contest 3-0. The first game was pure dominance by the Mounties. They had three scoring streaks in the game, totaling 23-2. They got all but two of the necessary 25 points to win a game, in their 8-0, 8-1, and 7-1 runs throughout the game. After trailing 3-1, Mount notched eight consecutive points and never looked back. After the Falcons scored, cutting the lead to 9-4, they reeled off a 8-1 run, upping the lead to 17-5. A 7-1 run finished the game, as they won it 25-7. The Falcons regrouped and the second game was much more competitive. The biggest lead for either team …

After an uninspired first half MSC came back strong in the second for a 2-0 victory on the road.
Despite getting outplayed in the first half, the Mounties did not surrender a goal and rebounded nicely in the second half to defeat Ponaganset 2-0 in girls soccer. Ponaganset came out strong in front of their home crowd, putting a lot of early pressure on the Mountie defense. The Chieftains created a good scoring chance two minutes in but were unable to cash in on their opportunity. A few minutes later Brooke Graham had a good run ahead of the pack but was unable to finish. Ponaganset controlled everything but the scoreboard in the first half. The Chieftains controlled the midfield with sound passing, dictating the pace and tempo of play. Ponaganset almost scored on a free kick from Taylor Bigwood fourteen minutes into the game, but it …

Kelsey Lace and Danielle Lippacher dominate play at the net, lifting Mount St. Charles to a 3-1 victory over East Providence.
East Providence travelled to Mount St. Charles for a well-matched Division I girls volleyball match-up on Wednesday, but watched an early lead slip away as the MSC girls battled upwards through some tight games. The Townies jumped out to a score of 8-4 early on, but that lead was quickly erased by the Mounties who tied the score at eight apiece. The Townies stayed poised and played clean volleyball, staying away from errors and playing tough defense. This coupled with the erratic hitting of the Mounties led to a 19-13 lead for East Providence. Serves by Kim D'Alessandro enabled the Mounties to once again shrink the lead down to two, but the Townies rallied and put game one away on a kill down the line from Leah Drolet on a quick-set. The …

Despite graduating five starters, the Mount St. Charles girls volleyball team is geared up for another shot at the state championship.
Despite graduating five talented players from last year’s team, Mount St. Charles Academy is expected to contend again for the girls volleyball Division I state title. Gone from last year’s squad are middle blocker Maria Saia, outside hitter Tessa Jacobs, right side hitter Lauren Palazzini, middle blocker Tara Murray and libero Sarah Manupelli. Saia, Jacobs and Palazzini garnered post-season honors. Not many programs could lose players of that caliber and sustain an elite level of performance, but not many programs have the depth and ability to groom young players that Mount has. Leading the Mounties this season will be senior outside hitter Kelsey Lace. She was the only non-senior to be named first team all-state last year. Senior Jessie …

Despite the economy, private institutions are thriving.
Despite the downturn in the economy, local Catholic schools have still been filling enrollment relatively well. Several in the area have said they have maxed out their enrollment, and are also filling up admissions waiting lists. Bishop Feehan High School Director of Admissions Lynn Gale said the school’s enrollment is maxed out at more than 1,000 students, with many on waiting lists for the Attleboro school. “When the economy dropped a few years ago we thought we were going to see a drop in admissions, but in fact, it was quite the opposite,” she said. “We haven’t seen a decrease in [enrollment] numbers. We have people calling every day about admission.” She attributes the success of the school to the level of excellence in the academic …
