Woonsocket Woman To Plead Guilty To Medicare Fraud

Sonja Ascoli allegedly defrauded Medicare of more than $70,000.

A Woonsocket woman who allegedly promised custom fit shoes for diabetics and medical equipment for arthritis sufferers “at no cost” to Medicare beneficiaries at Rhode Island senior centers, housing complexes and assisted living centers, has agreed to plead guilty to defrauding Medicare of more than $70,000, announced U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha. Sonja Ascoli, 59, of Woonsocket, was charged in U.S. District Court in Providence on Monday with allegedly participating in a scheme to entice Medicare beneficiaries to order products and medical equipment from the company she represented, Planned Eldercare, of Illinois, by promising that the products would be provided “at no cost” to them. Blue Cross & Blue Shield hosts an information session today at 1 p.m.

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island Medicare experts will host a meeting today at 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 194 Fortin Drive.  During the meeting, the public can ask questions about Medicare Advantage plans. Now is the time to plan for next year's coverage. The open enrollment period ends on Dec. 7. Light refreshments will be served, and no RSVP is required. Plan Now For Your 2012 Medicare Coverage

The state Division of Elderly Affairs will be at the Woonsocket Senior Center on Oct. 21 to help residents navigate through the Medicare open enrollment period.

It's never too soon to start thinking about your health. While the leaves haven't even begun to fall yet, it's already time to plan your health care for the new year, especially for seniors. The Medicare open enrollment period begins Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7, according to a press release from the Rhode Island Department of Human Services, Division of Elderly Affairs. Now is the time to make any adjustments to your coverage. Any changes made will take effect on Jan. 1, 2012. Navigating through the health care process can be confusing and cumbersome.
