Woonsocket Caps MLK Weekend With Morning Ceremony

Officials, crowd gather at Martin Luther King Memorial to laud day of service.

  Officials and a crowd of about 50 met at the Martin Luther King Memorial on South Main Street Monday morning for the celebration of the Civil Rights Leader's birthday, lauding recent public service and calling for more.  Mayor Leo Fontaine, Councilmen Christopher Beauchamp and Bob Moreau, Rep. Stephen Casey (D-Dist. 50) and RI Treasurer Gina Raimondo spoke during the brief ceremony, calling on teamwork and community service to address the city's problems as well as those of the state. The weekend's events celebrating King began on Friday with a banquet at Savini’s Restaurant on Rathbun Street, followed by a Day of Community Service at the Woonsocket Police Deptartment lobby, the painting of new murals at The Woonsocket High School Gym …

Monday Five: Martin Luther King Day, Help, Council, Blog

Welcome to Monday - here are some things to know.

  Got something going on that people have to know about a particular morning at 5:30 a.m.? E-mail it to robert@patch.com, and ask nicely - it'll probaby make it in for the following morning. Martin Luther King - Today is the national holiday honoring Martin Luther King. It's also a national day of service, a "day on, not a day off." The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve,  calling for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to the country's most pressing problems. How are you going to serve?  You can think about that this morning at 10 a.m., at the MLK Memorial at the corner of South Main and Mason Streets. Woonsocket Celebrates Martin Luther King's Legacy This Weekend

National Day of Service called for Monday, Martin Luther King Day.

  The MLK Community Committee, which consists of parishioners from St. James Baptist Church and members of several community-based non-profits, is hosting a weekend full of events to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King starting Friday. The late civil rights leader's birthday (Jan. 15) will be celebrated with a national holiday Monday, which President Barack Obama has declared a National Day of Service – a "day on, not a day off."
