LETTER: Seeking Workers of Mill Complex

Video will be shot.

Dear Editor: I am working with the Plastics Group of America, the company that is undertaking the restoration of the Jules Desurmont Mill complex in Woonsocket. As part of their efforts, they are trying to create a historical video about the site that they can include on their website. For that video, they are seeking to interview people who had previously worked at the Mill complex. I am hoping that if you publish this letter, some people who fit this profile might read it and contact me so that we could talk.  My email address is gczar@comcast.net. I can also be reached by phone at 781-893-3389. I would love the opportunity to speak with some former workers and get their perspective on what it was like working in the complex “back then” …

Letter: Payday Lending Does more Harm than Good

A letter to the editor by Stephen V. Martino of Pawtucket.

Recent attempts by payday lenders to use the media to promote their product comes as little surprise. There is, after all, pending state legislation which could cost these predatory lenders millions of dollars. These shortsighted attempts are nothing more than payday loan industry rhetoric at its finest. Since I'm a former manager for Advance America, I feel like I have to respond. Payday lenders argue that customers seek payday loans as a "responsible way" to manage their finances. What they tactfully ignore, however, is the high rate of frequency at which customers use the payday loan product. The truth is, an overwhelming percentage of customers pay their loan every two weeks on their payday and then re-borrow upon every visit. In many …

Sounds like what the City of Woonsocket has been doing, only they're not called payday loans at the Finance Department, they're called deficit reduction bonds or tax anticipation notes.   more ›

Hilton: Thank You For The Tents

The River United Methodist Church thanks donors for helping homeless.

TO THE EDITOR: I would like to take a moment to thank all the community that assisted The River United Methodist Church and Harvest Community Church in Woonsocket, RI in their efforts to raise tents and sleeping bags for the 30 homeless men in the community. Your efforts have gone beyond being a temporary Band-Aid and manifested God's Mercy and Christ's Love on earth. I would like to make you aware that some of these men have moved beyond their situation. Three men have found housing and employment. These men were homeless not due to drugs or alcohol, but because of the loss of employment, housing, and the lack of family/friend emotional assistance. The River United Methodist RISEM Men's Group and Spiritual Practices Women's Group as …

Kind: Anti-Renter Sentiment Troubling, Unproductive

Renters are productive citizens, too.

To The Editor: I am concerned about the anti-renter sentiment expressed by many recently. The financial crisis facing Woonsocket is grave, indeed, and I certainly understand and appreciate the taxpayers’ frustration with the supplemental tax increase and the ongoing financial challenges which even this increase will not address. That having been said, we have been hearing a lot about 10,000 taxpayers carrying 40,000 non-taxpayers, a “head tax” for the privilege of living in Woonsocket, and even a charge for having children in the public schools. While I join those who abhor the welfare abusers, disability frauds, illegals, and worse who are among renters, I feel it’s important to take a step back and examine these arguments more …

Jurek: Feel Free To Be Offended, But Don't Force Belief On Others

Author: America based on Christian principles.

To the editor: This in response to an Associated Press article in The Enterprise (Brockton) about the removal of a Woonsocket World War I and II memorial cross. I am a Catholic converted from the Jewish faith only three years ago. But even if this weren't so, I would be just as sad and appalled. The assertion that the founding fathers founded a secular government is erroneous. They founded a government based upon the concept of human freedom from tyranny by government or any other entity. That included freedom of religion as granted by the First Amendment of our Constitution. There is no amendment that specifically proclaims any "separation of church and state." At its birth, America was based on Christian principles. As for atheism, …

In his, "A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America" [1787-1788], John Adams wrote: "The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature; and if men are now sufficiently enlightened to disabuse themselves of artifice, imposture, hypocrisy, and superstition, they will consider this event…   more ›

Letter: Payday Loans a 'Valued Credit Option'

An official from Advance America responds to a recent letter calling on the Rhode Island General Assembly to impose limits on the interest charged for so-called payday loans.

To The Editor: A recent letter to the editor (“Support Curbs on Payday Lending Interest Rates,” Mar. 23, 2012) presents a misguided argument for regulations that would do more harm to consumers than good. When facing a financial shortfall, Rhode Islanders make borrowing decisions based on their personal and economic interests. For many, a payday advance, with its one-time fee of $10 per $100 borrowed, serves as an affordable tool for overcoming such challenges, especially when compared with more expensive options such as overdraft fees, unregulated Internet loans or missing a bill payment. While any form of credit can be abused or misused, our experience shows that most customers use payday advances responsibly: Over 95 percent of Advance …

Letter: My Voting Experience - You Just Have to Laugh and Keep Moving

A letter by Sharon Geving.

Well, Election Day was a busy day for everyone.   I was in a hurry as always, rushing to go vote between my employed work and my home work. I had planned to visit every one, at wherever the candidates would be, to wish them all well.   As I quickly walked through the darkness from the parking lot, at the back of the Fairmount Senior Center, I spotted a man who was standing near the lighted entrance smoking a cigarette. Without slowing down, I glanced his way and immediately turn my direction to the door.  As I reached out to open the door, I was suddenly thrown to the ground.   The man, and an elderly lady, rushed over to help me up but at that point, I was so shakened all I could say is, “whaaaa happeneddd?”   It appears that the …
