Retired Woonsocket Firefighter Lt. John Egan, founder of FireSmartKids, has lent his support to a resolution lending RI support to the US Fire Administration's call to declare the week of May 6 Arson Awareness Week. Representative Robert Phillips (D-Dist 51) and other house legislators have introduced the resolution supporting naming the week of May 6 – May 12 as a time to focus on education of fire setting issues. This year’s theme is “Preventing Youth Fire Setting”. Between 2005 - 2009, fires started by children playing accounted for an average of 56,300 fires with associated losses of 110 civilian deaths, 880 civilian injuries and $286 million in direct property damage per year.
