Gov. Chafee's office backtracks from an announcement Monday that there would be no official tree-lighting ceremony this year.
There will be a tree-lighting ceremony this year after all. Gov. Lincoln Chafee's top press aide said Tuesday she spoke in error Monday when she said there would be no tree lighting ceremony. "There will be an official tree lighting ceremony at the State House with the Governor in attendance," said Christine Hunsinger in an email statement. No date has been set. Now, the question is, will protesters turn up again as they did last year, when Gov. Lincoln Chafee referred to the large evergreen in the middle of the State House rotonda as a holiday tree instead of a Christmas tree. The tree was put up Monday. Last December, Chafee was lambasted by GOP lawmakers, some talk show hosts, and the Roman Catholic Bishop Tobin for his decision to …

Gov. Lincoln Chafee issued declaration at a press conference Sunday at noon, Superintendent Giovanna Donoyan canceled school at 1:30 p.m.
Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee declared a state of emergency just after noon today, warning residents to be prepared for the effects of Hurricane Sandy, and Woonsocket Public Schools were closed shortly after. Chafee said he will be on a conference call with other governors and President Barack Obama later today. Decisions on canceling schools and work and evacuation plans will be left to individual communities, following a conference call with town managers and mayors, said Chafee, who added that a decision whether to cancel the day for state workers will be made later today by his office. At the Woonsocket School Department, School Committee Chair Vimala Phongsavanh said Superintendent Giovanna Donoyan made the call at 1:30 p.m. to …

They fear raising the tax to 10 percent will send customers across the border.
Ask Roger Savini about Statehouse plans to boost the meals and beverage tax from 8 percent to 10 percent, and he can't help but raise his voice. "I can hit a golf ball into Massachusetts from my parking lot," says the owner of Savini's Restaurant on Rathbun Street. "And over there the tax is only 6.25 percent. If this passes, someone spending $100 a week dining out could save enough in a year by crossing the border that they could eat free for a week." He's not the only one opposed to the state squeezing more revenue from restaurant customers. Across the state, owners of taverns and eateries are speaking up in opposition to the proposed increase, part of Gov. Lincoln Chafee's $7.9 billion budget plan for the upcoming fiscal year. The …

The mayor warns of deep cuts, supplemental tax bills, and possible bankruptcy to fill a $10 million hole.
The Woonsocket Education Department is facing a $7.3 million budget shortfall, and the city could run out of cash to pay vendors and employees in a few weeks’ time, Mayor Leo Fontaine announced Monday night. "I cannot overstate the dire circumstances we face here," he told the City Council. "Obviously this number is devastating ... Bankruptcy certainly is on the table at this point." The red ink means the state may have to take over running Woonsocket, as happened in Central Falls last year, according to Fontaine. He noted the city is actually looking at a larger deficit than $7.3 million, because the city is also stuck with $2.7 million from last year's school department shortfall. "We're looking at a $10 million hole," he said. “There …
