Washington DC lawyer taking on case for free.
This week Gov. Lincoln Chafee made good on his pledge to appeal a May court decision forcing the state to turn over accused murderer Jason Pleau to federal authorities to the US Supreme Court, using the volunteered services of a Washington DC lawyer. Since the May ruling, Pleau has remained in federal custody under the keep of the US Marshal Service in Providence, said Jim Martin, public information officer for US Attorney Peter F. Neronha. Pleau has been the subject of a struggle between federal authorities and Chafee for nearly a year because he could face the death penalty in federal court. Resolution by Rep. Doreen Costa asks governor to abandon battle to keep Pleau from federal jurisdiction.
Rep. Doreen Costa (R- Dist. 31, Exeter, North Kingstown) has drafted a resolution asking Governor Lincoln Chafee to abandon his fight to keep accused murderer Jason Pleau in state custody. Pleau has been the subject of a struggle between federal authorities and Chafee for nearly a year because he could face the death penalty in federal court. On May 10, Chafee said he intends to appeal the U.S First Circuit Court of Appeals ruling telling him to turn over Pleau to federal authorities. Costa said her resolution asks Chafee to give up the fight out of respect for the family of David Main, whom Pleau is accused of killing during a night deposit robbery at Citizen's Bank. Sister of David Main says legal fight is preventing proper prosecution.
This morning, Gov. Lincoln Chafee responded to Deborah Smith, sister to David Main, who says he's preventing just prosecution of Jason Pleau, accused of killing her brother in a 2010 robbery. Pleau, 34, was one of three suspects arrested for the murder and robbery of David Main, which took place at Citizens Bank on Diamond Hill Road in Woonsocket in September of 2010. WPRI.com reports that Smith sent a letter to Chafee May 8 asking him to stop "obstructing justice" by fighting for custody over Pleau. Pleau, who has been the subject of a custody struggle between federal authorities and Chafee, could face the death penalty in federal court. Pleau, who has been the subject of a custody struggle between federal authorities and Chafee, could face the death penalty in federal court.
