Every year, Mount St. Charles Academy makes Christmas food baskets for families that are involved with the Family Resources Community Action group in Woonsocket. Throughout the Christmas season, the entire Mount community brings in food donations to fill each basket. Anyone can also take a child's name off of the MSC Giving Tree (whose family is receiving a food basket) and fill the baskets with toys as well. As the toys are wrapped, they fill up Mr. Burke’s office, principal of Mount Saint Charles Academy, until the baskets are assembled. This year, Mount students, parents, faculty, and staff delivered baskets to 75 families. Annual Christmas charity drive collecting gifts and clothes to help local families.
If you're having a tough holiday season, the volunteers and donors running City Hall's giving tree are working to come to your aid. Linda Plays at Mayor Leo Fontaine's office, who is running the program, said it starts every year with donations form the Verizon Pioneer Women, a group of Verizon retirees. The group contacted City Hall a few years ago to see if there was a list of people who needed help during the holidays, Plays said. Plays suggested combining the retirees' efforts with city employees to help people receiving services from Connecting Children & Families, Harvest Community Church, Family Resources and Sojourner House.
