Friday Five: Literacy Night, Water Flushing, Hazardous Waste, Community Garden

It's finally Friday -check out these things to know:

  Literacy night - Woonsocket Middle School is holding its annual Literacy Night on Thursday May 23, from 5-7 pm in the Hamlet Middle School Cafeteria. There will be food, games, books, and fun activities for the whole family. Water flushing through June - Woonsocket's Water Division will flush city water pipes between April 22 to June 28 in the south-west part of the city, starting at Manville Rd. Unidirectional Flushing Program (UDF) is a method of cleaning the water mainlines through a network of flushing sequences with the water being discharged from a fire hydrant.   Budget hearing - A public hearing on the budgets will be scheduled for May 9, 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. At their last meeting, The Woonsocket Budget Commission accepted the city's $79,136,063 budget as well as the School Committee's $65,771,967 budget, — passed during the Committee's last meeting April 10 after an initial split vote March 27, when two members expressed misgivings about the Budget Commission's influence over the medical insurance ($7,101,838) and dental insurance ($508,145) line items.   City Council - The City Council meets Monday night, 7 p.m. at City Hall in Harris Hall, 169 Main St., taking up an ordinance creating incentives for solar energy investment and abatement of taxes for two properties.  Flowers for Michelle - The Flowers for Michelle plant sale fundraiser is Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Leo Savoie School, 990 Mendon Road. Potted annuals will be on sale for $10, with admission to free informational gardening session. Other assorted gifts will be on sale as well.   City Council - The Woonsocket City Council meets tonight at 7 p.m. in the second floor conference room of City Hall for a work session discussion, "regarding Budget Commission matters," according to their agenda.
