Woonsocket's Voter Turnout Gaining On Count For 2008 Primary

First morning check-in with polls shows 3 perent of voters participating.

  UPDATE - 7:55 p.m. : As of 7 p.m., Election Clerk Henri Cyr reports the total voter turnout at 3,122 voters, or 14.92 percent. "It's low," he said. 1:35 p.m. : With the city's 11 polling spots' first check-in complete, turnout stood at 687 voters city-wide, about 3.28 percent of Woonsocket's 20,925 eligible voters, according to Election Clerk Henri Cyr. That's almost double the same number of voters who turned out by 10 a.m. during the 2008 primary  — 354 — Cyr said. Two more check-ins will happen at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., he said. Fewer polling places and the new voter ID law are changing things up for this election.

  Things are a bit different this election year in Wooonsocket. Before you show up to the polls on Tuesday, Sept. 11 for the primary elections, check out our quick and easy guide to this year's polls. Stuart Gitlow Makes Second Run In Dist. 49 Primary

Challenger has similar view to Baldelli-Hunt on taxes, new economic development ideas.

  When Stuart Gitlow ran against Lisa Baldelli-Hunt (D-Dist. 49) in the primary the first time in 2010, he won 19.4 percent of the vote. For the 2012 primary, with greater name recognition, a similar stance on the supplemental tax issue as his opponent and new ideas about economic development up his sleeve, he likes his chances a little better. Gitlow, a psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist, has been living in Woonsocket for nine years now. He and his wife, Heather, lived in Providence 14 years ago when they got married, and couldn't find a bigger house in Providence they could afford. Right! He told us what is good about this city and had a vision for the future. He reminded us of Woonsocket's potential mentioning our many "hooks" as a great place to live and do business. We have a rail system, a major water feature in the river and many great restaurants already in the downtown area. Candidates Challenge Woonsocket State Legislators

Cote, Brien, Baldelli-Hunt face primary contests Sept. 11.

There's a lot of competition for Woonsocket's Democrats in the Sept. 11 statewide primary, so make sure you're registered by the Aug. 12 deadline to have a say in who'll face who in the Nov. 6 election. In Rhode Island, if you're an unaffiliated voter, you can vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary, said Rob Rock at the RI Secretary of State's office. Once you vote in a particular primary, you're automatically registered as a member of that party. However, Rock said, on your way out of the polling place, you can ask a poll worker to dis-affiliate you, returning you to independent voting status.
