Woonsocket Weekend: Concerts Collide, Movies Pegged and Road Races

What are you doing this weekend, Woonsocket? 

The forecast for Woonsocket  calls for 70 degree weather and sun Friday, with some clouds Saturday, then a 40 percent chance of rain on Sunday — so get out and enjoy some of these great events, early if you can.

Chan's starts off the weekend Friday with rising blues and harmonica player John Nemeth, a singer reminiscent of BB King. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12.

At Stadium Theater, patrons can enjoy the Lynyrd Skynyrd stylings of the Aritmus Pyle Band with Skynyrd's former drummer Friday at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $26. On Saturday at 8 p.m., check out Chicago tribute band, Chicago Total Accces. Tickets start at $26

It's also the penultimate weekend at the Rustic Tri-Vue Drive-InThey're featuring a special Simon Pegg double feature with Shaun of the Dead and World's End, as well as The Conjuring based on events that occurred in Northern RI.

Here's the line-up for Sept. 20 and 21:

  • Shaun of the Dead [R] with World's End [R]
  • Insidious 2 [PG-13] with The Conjuring [R]
  • Planes [PG] with Monsters University [PG]
$25 per car load. Gate opens at 6, shows start around 7:40 p.m.

Or, you can check out bicyclists from near and far in the 2013 Woony River Ride, set for Sept. 21. The largest fundraiser of the year for the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council, the ride features four routes, with two of them taking in the scenery along the Woonasquatucket in Smithfield and other surrounding communities.

You can also spend some time at the Annual North Smithfield Great Pumpkin Festival Saturday, a public event celebrating the start of the autumn. Enjoy pumpkin related events, food, entertainment, community service information fair and more on the grounds of North Smithfield High School, 412 Greenville Road. Call the Town of North Smithfield 401-767-2200. 

If the weather holds, or if rain is no impediment, you can check out The Novans Pride walk/run 5k fundraiser for the Woonsocket Athletic Department. Proceeds will assist in keeping sports alive and kids healthy. Come out Sept. 22, 8:30 a.m. at The Gym, LLC at 2168 Diamond Hill Road. 

Or, you can trek further south to watch local runners in annual CVS Caremark 5K in Providence Sunday - The road race through the city is sure to provide a thrilling spectacle, especially the festively costumed Youth Race participants from local High Schools.
