I voted. I'm proud to express my unhappiness with the current status. I think a lot of people have not bothered to come out to vote because they believe that no one really wants to fix this awful situation. I think they believe, as do I, that most people who run for political office do so to behoove themselves and not the people that they are supposed to represent.

yup me voted
Steve November 09, 2011 at 12:37 AM
To see only 10 - 12% of the registered voters show up for this election is pitiful. People give their lives in other countries to exercise their right to vote, and we squander it like it doesn't matter. Unreal!
Chris12 November 09, 2011 at 01:16 AM
Steve-It is worse than pitiful. When someone tells me they have no interest in voting (usually for some stupid reason) I always ask if they remember the movie "Saving Private Ryan." Most say they remember. I then ask if they remember the FIRST ten minutes of the movie. Most say they do remember. I then remind them our brave men and women gave their lives to protect our freedoms. Tell me again why you are not interested in voting....
Steve November 09, 2011 at 01:50 AM
Chris, you and I have disagreed on issues in the past, but on this one, we are totally in sync. For someone not to vote and then complain how their local government is run is the height of hypocrisy. I can't figure it out..... God bless the folks that actually cast their votes tonite!

I would like to point out that the WTC members made up the bottom of the pack based on unofficial results. Unfortunately I like a few of their candidates, however, I feel that they were probably tainted by their association with Lima, Cournoyer and dead last Michaud. Mr Brien I would say is not a representative WTC candidate and I am very happy for him. I guess Michaud really didn't need our votes!
Mike Kind November 09, 2011 at 03:05 AM
I can't believe that Jim Cournoyer didn't win a seat on the council.
Jean-Paul Paquette November 09, 2011 at 03:46 AM
One incumbent voted out of office......SO MUCH FOR CHANGE! Woonsocket residents, stop crying about all your problems.....today was THE day to fix things, and look at the results .....hardly surprising! Way to go!
Lotus Lily November 09, 2011 at 04:11 AM
It's hardly surprising or shocking!!!! It's Woonsocket, where we've been a city on the move alright.....in the totally wrong direction!!!! I was hoping people would wake up but when you live in a city that's full of the "good ole boys club" so to speak, change is just a pipe dream!!!! I can honestly say I didn't vote for any of the goons and was hoping for a real change, even if I knew I was in the minority!!!!
Jerry November 09, 2011 at 04:28 AM
I would like to know how many seniors in highrisers voted. I believe they probably were the most people that voted, because there are a lot of seniors living in Woonsocket. I really and truly hope they didn't vote on who gave the best meal, or popular name recognition, but I think that's been going on for years and it's sad that all taxpayers didn't come out to vote who are voters, but people are disgusted and just gave up.....
Meesh November 09, 2011 at 10:28 AM
I agree with you Memere. As I stated in past postings, I also wrote in another person for mayor. I am very dismayed to see Chris Roberts elected to the school committee. We don't need another "rich" politician in the city.
Fina November 09, 2011 at 12:40 PM
That is not unique to Woonsocket. Seniors (in high rises or not) are the people who ALWAYS vote. Most others generally vote on name recognition, i.e. how many mailers they got and who had loads of signs. Or their friends. Then there's the minority of people who actually pay real attention who find their jaws on the floor and are shaking their heads when the poll numbers come in.
Meesh November 09, 2011 at 10:49 PM
Did any of the people voting know that Christopher Roberts has NEVER attended a school committee meeting?
Uncle Ben November 10, 2011 at 10:57 AM
None of these Retards are dummies, They had Buffets of Donuts and coffee and, at the Senior high risers. there are more than just seniors in this City. Where is the Crooked street for all the Crooked people in office ? Also a Council Member should only hold that seat, not 1 on the school commitee too. theres a conflict of interest there if I ever saw one.
therealtaxed2death November 10, 2011 at 01:38 PM
So out of the total amount of votes for Mayor, 1,462 voters actually voted for Leo Fontaine and the other 1,481 either voted for a cartoon character or left the line blank. More than half of the total voters for did not want Leo. Interesting numbers. Maybe it should be a wake up call to everyone in this administration and the others that follow.
Sandy Phaneuf November 10, 2011 at 05:34 PM
"Real," no, that is incorrect. 2,943 voters selected Mayor Fontaine.
therealtaxed2death November 10, 2011 at 06:20 PM
Oh, my bad! Even still though, with almost 4,500 ballots casted the mayor only got about 3,000 votes? Still not very impressive for him.
Lotus Lily November 10, 2011 at 09:14 PM
Yeah but I have worked with Leo Fontaine before he went into politics and I can say he is genuinely one of the good guys!!!! His heart was always in the right place and he was always coming up with great ideas to help others!!!!! Give him a chance.......remember he's got a huge mess to clean up thanks to Mayor Menard!!!!!
Still Hope November 10, 2011 at 11:10 PM
Can you clarify "huge mess"? She kept taxes lowest in the state, maintained utilities, attempted beautification and culturalization, kept the schools running, brought in big business, sponsored programs to assist homeowners, landlords, and tenants. Leo has been in the system for 20 years and in a few years as mayor managed to undo any progress we've made. He may be a nice guy, but he can't even keep the street lights on.
Meesh November 10, 2011 at 11:40 PM
Has everyone forgotten that he was on the city council for many, many year during Mayor Menard's administration?!?!?!?
Jean-Paul Paquette November 11, 2011 at 01:10 AM
Still Hope are you serious? Garbage tax, utilities multiplied times 4, and endless meaningless lawsuits caused by her huge ego! Granted, Leo was the council president when this happened and he is at fault, too. However , Susan Menard was the beneficiary of state money who chose to spend it like a drunken sailor on leave. Do you remember the $75,000.00 GO- FER janitor or the $100,000.00 Highway Superintendent? Leo and the council could have slowed this wasteful spending....BUT Susan Menard is the MAIN culprit for the city of Woonsockets' status....That is why she ran. No state money = failure!
Jean-Paul Paquette November 11, 2011 at 01:17 AM
It really doesn't matter, people like you chose to return people like this back in office anyway. You probably put the witch as a write-in and miss Mike "THE LYING KING" Annarummo.....Call John Dionne 2 to 4 Mon - Fri....You fit perfectly!
greg November 11, 2011 at 03:21 PM
Dave I agree on the new school committee. Now is the time for R.I. Education Commissioner Deborah Gist to provide professional oversight.
Still Hope November 11, 2011 at 08:31 PM
Don't mistake my sentiment for support of Menard. She was quite a witch, but she got the job done. I ask again, what mess did she leave? When Leo took over he doubled taxes(fact) and increased the city's spending(fact) with no significant change in population(fact) and no significant decrease in state funding(increase if you include middle school) and an increase in federal funding(unprecedented grants for fire, roads, schools, and other). Leo is currently overseeing a waning in the school system: poor programs(loss of block scheduling is fail), teacher layoffs, decline in performance(almost worst in state), and the lawsuit and audit of the School Dept was a sign of poor leadership and mismanagement of resources. Leo is faced with failing utilities(water plant debacle, can't keep lights on). Leo is driving big business away(from Diamond Hill to Highland Park). Leo, former Safety Director, left the obliterated Vermettes building to sit as a dangerous eyesore for over 4 months. Leo can't manage the increase in pension expenses caused from forced retirements and layoffs. Leo is letting this city slip and soon will join the ranks of Central Falls as a disgrace to surrounding communities. Leo led the charge to remove Menard from office. What has he accomplished since that can be considered a positive effect of that?
iPatch November 11, 2011 at 11:55 PM
Still Hope, good points. I can't see any positives coming from Leo since he's been mayor as well. Maybe we can get the police chief to run for mayor someday. He seems to be the ONLY leader in all of our departments who can get positive things done in this city.
greg December 06, 2011 at 02:52 PM
Meesh, See my prediction in Nov 11---even sooner than I thought Greg
Meesh December 06, 2011 at 10:15 PM
And before the new school committee was even sworn in....
