Should Woonsocket Allow Backyard Chickens?

The council on Monday night will review a proposal that would allow backyard chickens. Councilors voted down a similar proposal last year.

The Woonsocket City Council will review another proposal that would allow backyard chickens in the city.

The council last year rejected an ordinance that would have allowed backyard chickens. Critics were concerned about the noise, smell, and the prospect that the chickens could attract pests.

The council on Monday night will review an ordinance sponsored by Councilor Dan Gendron, according to ABC 6.

His proposal would allow chicken keepers to go before the Zoning Board for approval to raise backyard chickens.

We have had 3 or chickens in Smithfield for several years. We have them in a small coop with a pen and on weekends we let them out in our fenced yard to roam. We have only females and they are layers for about two years. We have found them to be a fun experience for our family. The kids had taken responsibility for feeding and watering. We used the manure in our compost and put in the garden. They follow us around the yard like dogs might. We haven't expected to save money on eggs, but it is nice when small children come by and open the small door to check for eggs and the eggs are fresh and better tasting. I even hatched eggs once as an educational experience, kept 4 and sold the rest. I think that if done properly, it shouldn't be a problem and it is a rewarding and educational experience for families; in fact more so than other types of pets.

I would like to clarify Steve's comment; I'm sure he meant "close to 60K a year" cumulatively, as we each make a 9K a year stipend, minus taxes.

Melissa, I'm sure who ever reads the Patch know that you folks on the present City Council make 8K a year, which as far as I'm concerned, is 8K too much to do nothing more than pass individual tax reductions and chicken ordinances! I believe you pseudo city councilors should meet now every two months, earn 2K, and call it a day! And now your heading up a small business sub committee in the city? Give me a break! You’re playing softball in a hard ball league, especially once you look at the new LBH commercial tax rate in the city and the migration of businesses to Dowling Village! This city is toast, and you “Rookies” can only come up with “Legal Chickens” and pass a City Budget that raises taxes once again? Unreal!

Steve, businesses started migrating to N.S. Under Fontaine's administration. If Our previous Mayors raised taxes instead of worrying about re-elections we wouldn't be in this situation. Get real

Smiley, the reason people are leaving our great City is because of high taxes.Get real. A Receiver was needed to protect the taxpayers not a Budget Commission to protect the unions.
