School Committee To Discuss Raising WHS Passing Grade Threshold

Agenda features talk on changing passing score back to 70.

School Committee member Vimala Phongsavanh is introducing a proposal during tonight's meeting of the board to raise the threshold for a passing grade at Woonsocket High School from 60 to 70.

The Woonsocket Call reports the agenda item will include a discussion of how the passing grade change to 60 has worked out.

The change went into effect last year, which in essence would have aided about 30 Woonsocket High School Seniors in making graduation that year.

The committee will also discuss the district's attendance policy.

Check the attached agenda for a full list of items for tonight's meeting, 7 p.m. at the Woonsocket Middle School's Hamlet Building, 60 Florence Drive.

Editor's note: This article has been updated to reflect the effect of the lowered passing grade. While the change would have improved the graduation rate, the stated reason for the swtich was to align graduation requirements with those of  RIDE.

"...intended to aid about 30 Woonsocket High School Seniors in making graduation that year, and to improve the graduation rate in general." Lowering or watering down the passing grade so kids can graduate is nothing to be proud of. It's one step up from the accepted practice of "social promotions." Shameful and sad

So we dropped a passing grade from 70 to 60 in order to let more students graduate? That is ridiculous! How about holding our students to a higher standard? Let's think about this for a second. I don't want a mechanic working on my car who went to school but had to pass with lower standards. I don't want a doctor working on my health who had to have his grades "helped" in order to pass. Let's bring the grades back up to 70 for passing.

Was this dropped for just one year? Who voted that in?

This is a terrible idea!

Unbelievable Vimala, just keep promoting children who can't pass on their own. Let's face, the teachers don't want to keep these kids in their class anymore. They want to get rid of them to make their life easier. It's no wonder our scores are lower than average, SAME WITH OUR SCHOOL COMMITTEE!!

I can't believe what the school committee wants to do. Just goes to show you how much the school committee is out of the loop. I'm sure the teachers don't want these kids in their class anymore either. just keep passing the problems on...that's what the school dept does best

Now wait a minute....it's not the teachers who have lowered the standards, it is the school committee! Don't start generalizing about people you know nothing about.

FYI - Vimala was actually the one who brought up the topic of raising the passing grade standard. I think you're under the wrong impression as to Ms. Phongsavanth's stance.

An extremely misleading article by the Patch. The members of the School Committee made it very clear last night that the grade was lowered last year to be in line with the State Mandate of a 60 and the 60 Requirement that is in place in the surrounding communities. Even in Barrington, Lincoln, Cumberland and East Greenwich a 60 is the passing grade. The preliminary results of changing the passing grade from a 70 to a 60 show that 30 additional seniors graduated. The grade was not specifically changed to push these students through.

John - That was a poor choice of words on my part, and unintentional. I've taken a second look at the story I referenced, updated this preview and added a note about the change. I'll be more careful in the future.

Somebody please explain how its possible that Ellie Nadeau can say on the radio today that she doesn't know what's going on with closing schools, moving grades into the middle school etc., yet the superintendent is telling state reps, other school committee members and the Call???? www. woonsocketcall.com. Is anyone in charge over there????

She has selective hearing!!!

Why to help kids strive for success i know i would rather pass with a 70 than take a 60 and not feel proud wouldn't you?
DonQ April 15, 2012 at 11:19 AM
This is proof once again that the entire school committee needs to go. Students aren't smart enough to pass with a grade of 70 (which is still not very good), so we lower the grade to 60 just so they can pass. Exactly how is that helping anyone other than making are educators look like they are doing a good job - when obviously they are failing big time. Of course, John will come to the rescue of the teachers (he either is a teacher, married to a teacher, or related to a teacher by other than marriage) and defend the practice of the dumbing of America because everyone is doing it. Our education system is a disgrace because the teachers aren't allowed to speak out against this ridiculous travesty.

DonQ ?(Ron), You're an idiot. You research nothing but claim to know everything. You're lack of research and rumor fueled posts are leading the charge of ignorance in this city. I post the facts, don't be lazy. Look them up.
