Friday Five: Place Jolicoeur, Banned Art, Boxing And Wrestling

It's Friday, Woonsocket - Don't start the weekend without these things to know:

 

Place Jolicoeur - Today at 5 p.m., Mayor Leo Fontaine has announced there'll be a press conference to talk about the Place Jolicoeur war memorial and the demand of the Freedom From Religion Foundation that the cross atop it be removed. The conference will be held at the Woonsocket Museum of Work and Culture at 42 South Main St. In addition to the Mayor, representatives from the United Veteran’s Council and the War Memorial Committee will be speaking at the news conference regarding their efforts to preserve the Place Jolicoeur memorial.

Banned - The exhibit, "Banned in RI, A Humorous Commentary From a Colorful Mind" opens today at , 68 S. Main St. from 6 to 9 p.m. Rhode Island Artist Ricky Gagnon uses his varied life experiences and lets them run amok in his very active imagination, then combines them with his sense of humor and love of color to create his art.

Festival! - Everyone's invited to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs' 57th annual Parish Festival tonight and tomorrow, including carnival rides and food vendors arrayed along Park Avenue. Admission to the event is free, and festival goers can pay for food or a ride as they like. You can also purchase a one-price $20 bracelet that will let you on the rides all day Saturday.

Wrestling - will begin its SPW Slamming Summer Tour tonight at 7:47 p.m. at 126 Main St. Come out and see guys lay down a few cross-body moves, a big splash or body avalanche.

Boxing - The Woonsocket Boxing Club/Woonsocket Boys and Girls club is having its third Boxing Exhibition held this Saturday Aug. 4 from 12-2:30 p.m. at the Woonsocket Boxing Gym, 68 South Main St. next to Riverz Edge Arts project. These exhibiitons help our youths come to a place where they can feel comfortable and to showcase their talents.
