Woonsocket is RI's Third Most Violent Community

Only Providence and Pawtucket reported more violent crimes last year.

Woonsocket was among the most violent communities in Rhode Island in 2012, with more violent crimes reported than all but two communities, according to statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The FBI's annual Uniform Crime Report shows there were 220 violent crimes reported in Woonsocket last year, behind only Pawtucket's 288 and Providence's 1,133. Central Falls was next with 142. 

Of the violent crimes in Woonsocket in 2012, there were 138 aggravated assaults, 59 robberies and 23 rapes, according to information submitted by local law enforcement agencies. There were no murders or manslaughters reported last year.

The FBI compiles the information is released to the public in the fall of the year that follows the reported year.

In addition to violent crimes, Woonsocket reported 1,259 property crimes in 2012 – 840 larcenies, 346 burglaries, 73 car thefts and 20 cases of arson.
