Police Log: Woman Arrested For Passing Funny Money

On Jan. 21, at about 5:30 p.m., Woonsocket Police were dispatched to the area of Winter Street and North Main Street for a report of a woman passing counterfeit bills.

When they arrived at the location, they meti with Keith Elliot, who said he had given a woman four $5 bills for a $20 bill, which he believed was counterfeit. 

Elliot said he had been traveling on Winter Street when a woman wearing a black hat and black/blue sweatshirt tried to stop him in the road and asked for change for a $20 bill. When Elliot exchanged his four $5 bills for the woman's $20 bill, he said it felt strange and appeared discolored. The woman promptly ran off, he said, pointing toward Pond Street, according to Officer Michael Velino's report. 

Velino found a woman, later identified as Krystal White, walking in traffic attempting to stop cars, carrying a bill in her left hand. Velino turned on his cruiser's lights, and White approached, asking him for change for a $20 bill. The bill sported the same serial number as the one Elliot said he'd gotten from White, and Velino reported it felt strange to the touch.
White returned Elliot's money on the spot, but the refund didn't spare her a trip to Woonsocket Police Headquartes. She was arrested and charged with passing counterfeit bills, a felony.
