Police Log: Man Arrested After Attacking Girlfriend's Father With Knife

The following arrest information was supplied by the Woonsocket Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Woonsocket Police arrested Michael Smith, 21, of  816 Bernon St., apt. 2, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. after he tried attacking his girlfriend's father with a knife during an argument.

At about 1:29 p.m., Woonsocket police officers responded for a domestic disturbance to 816 Bernon St., apt. 2, where Smith and his girfriend, Rondelle Hadrick, 21 and her father Joseph Hadrick, 60, share an apartment.
When police arrived, a witness pointed them down the street, where Smith and Rondelle were walking.

Police caught up to the couple and asked what had happened. Rondelle said the couple had been staying in her father's apartment for several months. She said she and Smith began to argue, and her father attempted to break it up, causing Smith to argue with her father instead. During the argument, she said, she and Smith ran out of the house.

During this discussion, an officer speaking with the father learned that Smith might be carrying a knife, and alerted the officers speaking with the couple. They asked the two if Smith had a knife. Rondelle said Smith had picked up a knife during the argument but had dropped it after leaving the house. Shortly after this part of the conversation, Smith attempted to argue with a man passing by in a car, prompting officers to restrain him and search him for weapons, which they didn't find.

The elder Hadrick said he had heard the two arguing and attempted to break it up, since it was time for his daughter to pick up his grandson. Smith asked him, "You want in on this? You want to take this outside, old man?" and attempted to attack him, but was blocked by Rondelle.

Smith responded by running into the kitchen and grabbing a knife, then attempting to stab Hadrick. Hadrick grabbed an ironing board and used it to shield himself, shoving Smith away with it. Hadrick eventually pushed Smith out of the apartment, where the younger man began to punch walls and broke a window. Smith also used the knife to break a hole in the stairway wall, shattering the handle of the knife in the process.

Once outside, Smith picked up objects and began throwing them at the house, taunting Hadrick to fight him. Smith ran away when he heard police sirens, Hadrick said. Smith, already under arrest, was transported to Woonosocket Police headquarters, where a more thorough search of his person revealed he had a gram of marijuana in his posession.

Smith was charged with domestic assault with a deadly weapon, a felony, domestic disorderly conduct, posession of marijuana, first offense, and resisting arrest.
