Police Arrest Man Reportedly Standing On Tables at Autumnfest Beer Garden

The following arrest information was provided by the Woonsocket Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Woonsocket Patrolman Patrick McGourty and Lt. Brad Scully were patrolling Autumnfest Oct. 12 at about 8:19 p.m. when a beer garden patron alerted them to a man standing on tables.

The policemen entered the beer garden, locating the man described to them, wearing a Nautica sweatshirt. Scully asked the man, later identified as Derek Daniel Fortier, 32, of 38 Read Ave., if he'd been standing on the tables, according to McGourty's report.

Fortier responded with his own question, inquiring about the last time someone had beat Scully up, although not in those words. Scully responded, "Excuse me, are you speaking to a police officer that way?" according to McGourty's report.

Fortier puffed out his chest, McGourty wrote, squaring off with Scully and threatened to beat him up, using two profanities, one as an adjective, according to McGourty's report.

Given Fortier's violent and tumultuous behavior, McGourty reported, the officers each grabbed one of the man's hands and escorted him out of the beer garden to a safe area. The officers then handcuffed him, arresting him and charging Fortier with disorderly conduct.

Fortier was transported to Woonsocket Police Headquarters at 242 Clinton St.
