Man Sentenced in Woonsocket DUI Case

Rhode Island Atty. Gen Peter Kilmartin announced the sentence for Peter Major from a July, 2011, hit-and-run.

The Pawtucket man who admitted to hitting a pedestrian in Woonsocket and fleeing the scene has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, with six years to serve.

Superior Court Justice Netti C. Vogel imposed the sentence on Peter Major, 43, on Tuesday, state Atty. Gen. Peter Kilmartin announced.

Major pleaded guilty on Apr. 30 to charges of DUI, death resulting, and leaving the scene of an accident, death resulting, brought by Woonsocket Police after his car struck 46-year-old Suzanne Potter, of 347 Grove St., on July 1, 2011.

According to prosecutors, Major then fled the scene and was later stopped by Lincoln Police.

Potter died about a month later from injuries she suffered as a result of the collision.

Vogel ordered Major to serve three years at the Adult Correctional Institutions, three years of home confinement, and a nine-year suspended sentence with nine years' probation.

Major must also pay a $5,000 fine, perform 250 hours of community service, keep an interlock system in his car — which locks the ignition after a negative breath test — for two years, give up his license for five years, and attend alcohol and substance abuse counseling, Kilmartin announced.
