Driver With Suspended License Leads WPD on Chase

On Nov. 20 at 2:03 a.m., Officer Parick Greeno was approaching Manville Road in his cruiser when a 1997 Nissan Altima crossed in front of him at about 55 mph, it's engine revving.

Greeno reported he followed, clocking the Altima at 50 mph in the 35 mph zone, abruptly slowing and moving to the side of the road as if to stop before continuing on, according to Greeno's report. The car took a wide left turn on to Hughes Street, crossing the center of the roadway and causing a hazard for any oncoming traffic that might have been in the road at the time. Greeno turned on his emergency lights as the Altima turned onto Logee Street, but it failed to pull over.

Greeno asked dispatch to notify Lincoln PD the pursuit was moving into their jurisdiction. The Altima continued to speed through Lincoln, running about a dozen stop signs, according to Greeno's report, until, while on Old River Road, two cruisers approached the Altima from the other direction. The Altima finally pulled over in the lot of the Coffee Cubby.

Greeno identified the driver as Henry Torres, 33, of 42 Chalapa Ave., who told him he'd refused to pull over because his car wasn't registered. Officers also found a half-empty .40 oz bottle of Natural Ice Beer behind the rear passenger seat.

His passenger, Carmen Desjardin, 37, told Officer Sean Rochette that Torres had picked her up and simply told her they were going for a ride. As the officer began chasing them, she said, she pleaded with Torres to stop, but Torres replied, 'Nah, I'm not stopping,' she said, according to Rochette's report.

Torres was arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving with a suspended license. He was also issued citations for operating without evidence of insurance, possession of an alcoholic beverage while operating a motor vehicle.

Desjardin was wanted on a Sixth District warrant for failing to appear for a pre-trial hearing. She was arrested too.

Both were transported to Woonsocket Police Headquarters and secured in cells without incident.
