Driver Hands Cop Pot Instead of License; Carrying Crack

Carrying an ounce or less of pot is no longer a criminal offense, but there is no amount of it that will pass for a valid driver's license, as one Woonsocket man learned. 

Woonsocket Police Officers Scott Breguet and Matthew Bourgoin were called to 1412 Park Ave. Jan. 1 at 3:35 a.m., for a report of a man slumped at the wheel of a car. 

When they arrived, they found a car parked across several parking spots in front of the Dollar Tree store, with the engine running, and the brake lights on. Inside, they saw the driver, later identified as Rahsad E. Wilson, 27, of 157 Halsey St., who appeared to be sleeping.

Breguet spoke with Wilson, who appeared confused and sported bloodshot eyes, according to his report. When Breguet asked him for his license, Wilson removed a plastic bag containing marijuana from a compartment between the door and steering wheel, and handed it to the officer.

Breguet took the marijuana and repeated his request for the man's license. This time, Wilson shuffled through a pile of napkins, and handed the officer one of them. Wilson also appeared to think he was in the parking lot for Aly's Pub in Market Square.

These feats of cognition won Wilson an invitation to a series of field sobriety tests, which he allegedly failed. Wilson stepped off-line and broke heel-to-toe contact during the walk and turn, and only raised his foot an inch during the one-leg stand, according to Breguet's report.

Breguet arrested Wilson on suspicion of operating under the influence of alcohol/drugs, and transported him to Woonsocket Police Headquarters. 

A search of Wilson's car allegedly revealed two bags of marijuana, four cell phones, $199 in small bills and a small bag of crack cocaine. 

At the station, a search of Wilson's person reportedly turned up an additional four baggies of crack, a total of 2.5 grams. He also allegedly registered a .144 on the blood alcohol breath test. While discussing the crack, Wilson relieved himself in the processing area, according to Breguet's report. 
 
Breguet charged Wilson with possession of crack with intent to deliver, a felony, DUI and driving in possession of a controlled substance, both misdemeanors. He was fined $150 for the marijuana possession.
