CORRECTION: Attempted Arson Reported at Vacant Middle School

Ongoing investigation, few details available.

Woonsocket Police and Fire responded to the long-vacant former home to Woonsocket Middle School on Thursday for a report of an attempted arson.

Due to a reporting error, many parents were led to believe that there was an incident at Woonsocket Middle School, but that was not the case.

School officials said nothing occurred at the middle school and children were safe the entire day.

Several fire extinguishers were reportedly discharged and the fire was contained at the former school.

We deeply regret the error.

Good thing all the patch readers are perfect and NEVER make mistakes.

I appreciate you folks defending me. It's OK, though, I have a thick skin, which you need in this business. I do deserve a drubbing here, though, because it was quite a screw up. It's going to take me a few weeks to get up to speed and I promise I'll be posting stuff on Woonsocket Patch on an increasing frequency. For the record, I live in Cranston, which is where the former editor used to live. I won't be coming to Woonsocket as often as I'd like but I am going to try to swing through semi-regularly to give you some on-the-ground reporting, which you deserve.

Thanks Mark, sorry I was using you as a scapegoat to be upset with the Patch for getting rid of Rob who was always at every meeting the city had and was here first hand for us. Hopefully you will be able to attend many of our meetings and get the "real" scoop of what is going on in this city. Best of luck in your new position.

I understand. I hope that in the coming months we can work together to show some of the good things happening in Woonsocket, not just the bad.
